Sound of Music comes caroling into West this weekend

In the first production in Cranston West’s new auditorium, West Theater (S.T.A.G.E.) will be performing the Rodgers & Hammerstein rendition of the classic musical “The Sound of Music” this weekend.

The show will be at 7:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m. on Sunday. Tickets are $12.

This is the first production of the school year for Nancy Vitulli, theatre director, and the West S.T.A.G.E. as they put on their rendition of the classic story set in Austria during the Nazi occupation.

Vitulli, an English teacher at the school, teaches the play to her classes and has also directed this version many years ago.

In the lead roles as the governess Maria Rainer and captain George Von Trapp are seniors Megan Mahoney and Sean Sova, respectively.

“I’m excited to have been cast in ‘The Sound of Music’ and honored to be able to tell this classic and important story to all who come see it,” Sova said.

West students Mikayla Kiernan and Gabriella Long led the crew as stage managers for the production while Eliza Machado, Samantha Mastrati, and Aria Pega designed the set.

“Designing a set for a production this big is a lot of responsibility and takes a lot of time, however it is fun and rewarding to see the beautiful progress,” said Machado.

That progress was made possible by the efforts of 32 student cast members and more than 50 student members of the production crew, as well as a number of parent volunteers.

After months of preparation and rehearsals, the cast and crew are going through “tech week” right now so that the three productions can run smoothly this weekend.

Tickets can be reserved or purchased at chsw-theater.weebly.com and will be sold to students during lunch this week or, if available, outside of the theater one hour before each show.
