Spremullo caps off historic season at Bay View

The Bay View Academy swim team had a historic run in 2018-19, winning the Division II State Championship at Brown for the first time in 17 years.

There was perhaps no better performer for the Bengals than Cranston native Gianna Spremullo.

Spremullo, a junior, finished the year by winning gold in the 200-yard medley, the 100-yard backstroke, and was a member of the 200-medley relay team that took silver. She was later named First Team All-State for the 200 IM and backstroke, while also making the second team in the 200 relay.

“This high school season was by far the best one yet. I think the proudest moment for me was winning our first ever division title. My team won the final 400 freestyle relay at divisions, and the looks on my teammates’ faces was a moment I will never forget. Personally, it was an amazing feeling to meet most of my goals that I set at the beginning of the season,” said Spremullo of her campaign.

Although Spremullo was unsure of how much success she would have coming into this past season, she would go on to enjoy arguably the best year a swimmer has had in school history, and accomplished many of her personal goals along the way.

“At the beginning of the season, I wasn’t sure what to expect. But as the season progressed, I knew I was going to put forth my best effort to reach my goals for the season,” said Spremullo. “One of my goals that I accomplished was to go undefeated in all my individual races. But I think the best part about swimming is accomplishing something in a race that you didn’t expect you could have done.”

Spremullo is proud of her improvement in the pool throughout her high school career, and hopes to take another step forward during her final year at Bay View.

“I’ve definitely grown a lot since the beginning of my freshman year. I went from not winning an individual event at states my freshman year to placing first in both events in my sophomore and junior year. I think what changed after my freshman year was, I had a much more positive outlook coming into my races instead of putting so much pressure on myself,” said Spremullo. “Next year my main goal is to make an All-American time in at least one event. I also would love to see my team win a relay title at states. Reaching those goals would be an amazing way to end my high school swimming career.”
