“Love Never Dies” picks up the story 10 years later. With the disappearance of the Phantom from the Paris Opera House, he escapes to a new life in New York City, where he lives amongst the screaming joy rides and freak shows of Coney Island.

Thompson plays Raul, who you may remember, saved Christine from the Phantom.

“He’s not really a bad guy,” Thompson said. “But demons do haunt him. He’s a great character to play. I have a great duet with the Phantom.”

Thompson has had a rich and rewarding life in the theatre, recently serving as understudy for the character of Joe opposite Glenn Close in “Sunset Boulevard.”

“I had a chance to perform the role four times,” he said. Glenn Close is such a wonderful actress, it was an honor to play opposite her.”

Thompson is a baritone, allowing him the opportunity to play many musical roles. He has also performed individual concerts and starred in a PBS special. Add starring roles in “Kiss Me Kate” and “Guys and Dolls” and you will see that the Temple University graduate has had a varied and successful career.

He will be boarding the train from New York after a short break between Tampa and Providence to open the day after Christmas. “Love Never Dies” will be at the Providence Performing Arts Center December 26-31, with a New Year’s Eve performance. For reservations call 421-ARTS.
