For the sixth consecutive year, schools all over the city have participated in Cranston Goes Orange for No Kid Hungry, part of a national movement to end childhood hunger. The drive was started in Cranston in 2012 by Caroline, Elizabeth, and Alexandra Cowart.

More than a dozen schools at all levels participated beginning at the end of October and continuing through the coming weeks to bring in food and raise funds for the Comprehensive Community Action Program (CCAP) in Cranston, which helps those in need get the resources necessary.

This year’s drive will help to fill Thanksgiving baskets for CCAP families in need. Students across the city wore orange in addition to bringing in food and funds in order to raise awareness of the issue of childhood hunger in America and to show that everyone, including students, can make a difference in fighting hunger and poverty.

This year more than $1,000 and thousands of non-perishable food items have already been brought in by staff and students across the city.

At Woodridge Elementary School, where more than $300 was collected in spare change alone, almost four hours were spent rolling coins, which tallied to include one $50 check from the faculty, $62 in cash, one $1.00 coin, 460 quarters, 572 dimes, 336 nickels, 1,595 pennies, a 25 cent Canadian coin, a $5 Jamaican coin, and tokens from both Chuck E. Cheese and United Skates of America as well as a pressed penny, said the school’s parent organization’s president, Lisa Mancini.

According to Joanne Gregory, CCAP’s vice president for social services, the Go Orange drive embodies the mission set forth by CCAP.

“CCAP is incredibly grateful for the generosity of the Go Orange drive,” said Gregory in an email. “The numbers are growing of the families we are serving and knowing that we can count on this wonderful program, year after year makes what we do that much easier. It is so wonderful to see all the schools and the children participating to help the needy in our community. This drive and the people that help, embody the mission of CCAP: lending a helping hand.”
