Hundreds of Rhode Island students in grades 6 through 12 gathered at Providence College’s Slavin Center for the 2012 National History Day on Saturday, April 28. These young history buffs were competing for the title of National History Day State Finalists. Francesca Viera of Cranston and schoolmate Maeve Kelly of East Providence are students from the Pegasus 7th grade program at La Salle Academy in Providence. The girls were chosen as National History Day finalists for their creation of an insightful website on “The Eiffel Tower.” Viera was determined to make the state’s finals and worked diligently night and day, researching and focusing on topics mainly related to the theme, “Revolution, Reaction, and Reform in History.” The pair won first place for the Junior Website Group, and will present their project at National History Day in June at the University of Maryland. After National History Day, the website will be available for public viewing. Pictured here, Viera and Kelly show off their first place certificates. (Submitted photo)
