West rebounds with 21-17 win over Barrington

The Cranston West Falcons edged the Barrington Eagles 21-7 on Friday night during a Division I-B football matchup at Cranston Stadium.

The Falcons were without their starting running back, junior Brennan Stetson, but that would not matter.

Cam Alves, West’s senior quarterback led the offense with one touchdown pass and two rushing scores.

“We’re missing a couple of guys due to injuries, but that’s part of the game,” Falcons head coach Tom Milewski said. “Some guys filled in and they did a nice job. We worked hard all week in practice, we strung together three good days.”

“Offensively, we needed to change some stuff up, which we did,” Milewski continued. “And we got some other playmakers involved tonight. I thought Myles (Chung) had a nice night, Kris Degaitas had a nice night, and Andrew Dionizio had a nice night. We have some other playmakers along with Cam Alves and Matt Carvalho that had a very good night for us.”

Cranston West took a 6-0 lead with 8:02 left in the second quarter when during a second and goal, Alves connected on a 13-yard touchdown pass to Matt Carvalho, a senior wide receiver. Carvalho also added the extra point and extended the Falcons advantage to 7-0.

With 5:20 remaining in the first half, West upped its lead to 14-0 when Alves ran a quarterback sneak three yards and into pay dirt.

Alves added another touchdown run with 4:06 left in the third quarter, this time from four yards out, and it upped the Falcons margin to 21-0.

During the first play of the fourth frame, West had another scoring opportunity, but on a first-and-goal from its own 6, Dionizio, fumbled the ball and it was recovered by Barrington’s Luke Gorham, a junior linebacker, who returned it to the Eagles 49.

Barrington capitalized on that field position and inched within two scores at 21-7, with 9:41 remaining in the contest, when Brigham Dunphy, a junior quarterback, dumped a short pass to Mark Bernardo, a junior running back, who took it in for a 43-yard score.

Next up for the Falcons (4-1) is the La Salle Academy Rams (4-1) on Friday night at 7 p.m.

“La Salle is going to be a test,” Milewski said. “They’re fast, they’re physical, and they throw the ball. They are putting up points. So, defensively, it’s going to be a big task and the best defense is a solid offense.”

“We’ve got our work cut out for us, but you know I’m happy with tonight’s win,” Milewski said. “We needed it. We struggled last week against a very solid Portsmouth team. And Barrington’s tough. I mean, they battled us the whole game. We never really felt like the game was over until the very end.”
