The Cranston West Falcons went to Moses Brown and defeated the Quakers 30-17 on Saturday afternoon in a Division I football slugfest.

West saw four different players find pay dirt with Cam Alves, Brennan Stetson, Myles Chung, and James Isme all scoring touchdowns. Chung even earned two points with a safety.

“Myles is becoming one of our key cogs in our offense and defense right now,” Falcons head coach Tom Milewski said. “And I’m happy to see that. He’s worked hard all summer and he’s really starting to come into his own.”

Moses Brown drew a 6-0 lead with 6:14 remaining in the first quarter when Miles Barrett, a senior, picked off an Alves’ pass and returned it 55 yards for a touchdown. After that, Matthew Jumes, the kicker, added the extra point and extended the Quakers edge to 7-0.

Milewski was happy his team was able to fight back from that deficit, but the coach wasn't thrilled with the mistakes.

“It was a great football game,” Milewski said. “It was tight. Moses Brown played hard. They gave us a good test. We played hard. We were able to manufacture a good second half, pretty much three quarters. We started lethargic in the first quarter. We had a couple of errors. I mean a blocked punt, a pick-six and then penalties. Right now we've got to fix that stuff.”

West cut the deficit to 7-2 after Chung sacked Joe McGahan, the Quakers quarterback, in the end zone for a safety with 10:44 left in the second quarter.

Three minutes after that, Chung rushed 19 yards on a second down and into pay dirt and gave the Falcons an 8-7 lead. Next, Madison Alves, the kicker, added the extra point and upped the West margin to 9-7.

Then, with 2:52 remaining in the first half, Isme, a senior, rushed three yards up the gut and into the house and expanded the Falcons buffer to 15-7. Cam Alves ran a keeper into the house for the two-point conversion after that and upped the West cushion to 17-7.

The Quakers pulled within 17-10 with six seconds left in the half, when Jumes made a field goal from 28 yards out.

The Falcons got some separation with 6:07 remaining in the third quarter after Alves rushed a keeper 13 yards up the middle and into pay dirt and put West up 24-10.

West drew decent field position for its last score when two plays into the fourth quarter, defensive lineman Rob Giarrusso and Dan Ormond jarred the ball loose from McGahan, and gave the Falcons the ball at their own 45.

West drove 55 yards during that possession which was capped by a Brennan Stetson 5-yard rushing touchdown with 5:22 left, and that extended the West advantage to 30-10.

With three minutes to play, Moses Brown inched within 30-17 on a third and goal from the 1 when Joe McGahan rushed up the gut and into pay dirt.

West improves to 3-0 in the league and plays next at Portsmouth (3-0) on Friday night at 4:30 p.m.

“Portsmouth is very good,” Milewski said. “They’re fast. They’re an up-tempo team. They are on the rise. So, it’s going to be a battle next Friday.”
