Falcons flying into playoffs

The Cranston West boys volleyball team has pieced together one of the best regular season runs in the program’s history, losing just one game in the regular season and wrapping up the top seed in Division II entering the playoffs.

The Falcons made the move down to D2 from D1 during the offseason, and felt that they had something to prove to the rest of the state. Now, as the championship favorite heading into today’s semifinals, the Falcons are confident, and prepared to enter the tournament with a target on their back.

“We’ve been playing well and we’re hoping the week away won’t affect us. We’ve been playing well but we know that teams always play better in the playoffs, and obviously we’re the big target. We just need to be confident and make sure that we don’t get complacent … we need to try to remain motivated and play hard,” said West coach Roger Tow.

The Falcons will take on the winner of the No. 4 Classical and No. 5 West Warwick quarterfinal matchup that was played on Tuesday evening. The results were not available at press time.

Regardless of opponent, Tow has urged his players to remember that every team will be on their game in the postseason, especially those two clubs who have both fallen victim to the high-flying Falcons earlier this season.

“Classical and West Warwick are both very good teams and they played us very hard. They have seen us; they know us and I’m sure that they have made adjustments. I’m sure that they have been game planning against us, and we need to make sure that we know that people will be playing against us with nothing to lose,” said Tow. “Everyone that we face from here on out will play well so we need to make sure that we’re on our game.”

On the other side of the bracket, No. 2 East Greenwich squared off against No. 3 Pilgrim on Tuesday evening as well. Pilgrim dealt the Falcons their lone loss of the regular season, which has only helped them improve and grow stronger, according to Tow.

“Everyday at practice we work on the fundamentals and we try to get everybody better each day. If everyone on the team is improving, then the entire team gets better. From there is when we start to look at other teams and game plan, trying to defend what other teams do,” said Tow. “Whether it be West Warwick, Classical, Pilgrim, East Greenwich, we know what they like and we know how they score points. With Pilgrim, we have figured out what we had done wrong and have made some adjustments of our own, so hopefully if we face them we can avoid those mistakes.”
