On Oct. 25, the Cranston YMCA, through a mini grant from One Cranston Initiative, held their inaugural Fall Harvest Dance.
Each table was adorned in Halloween orange and there were some Halloween decorations throughout the gym. Approximately 75 people with a range of diverse abilities come through for a few hours of dancing, eating and a sense of community.
The Cranston Y worked with their partners at their various Adult Day programs to offer a social mixer for participants with special needs as well as their family members and support staff. Many staff and participants came in costume or dressed up to enjoy music by DJ Frankie Morrobel, a photo booth with photos by Matt DeCataldo of MJ Deco Studios, as well as light refreshments.
Cranston Y Executive Director Andrea Champagne said of the event: "This is what we do as a Y. We see a need in our community and we venture to fill that niche.”
“Seeing upwards of 30 adults with special needs in our facility each day prompted us to think of something we could do to create additional opportunities for these participants to learn, grow and thrive as part of their Y experience and as usual, we benefited just as much as the them. This event was a great reminder of why we do the work that we do,” continued Champagne.
Once the DJ began playing line dances, the first one being the Cha Cha Slide, the dancers never left the floor.
