Watch The Producers with a local

We’re always glad to hear from Karen Kalunian, especially if she has news about her most talented daughter. Here’s the latest on Kim: “Just thought I'd drop you a quick note about an upcoming show that Kim is appearing in at The New Bedford Festival Theatre which is in The Zeiterion Theatre in New Bedford, Mass. The Producers, which is being Directed and Choreographed by Michael Susko…Also, playing the lead role of "Max," is Tom Gleadow, of Warwick…he and Kim have worked together before, sharing the stage at the Warwick Museum of Art with the local comedy improv troupe, Unexpected Company. The Producers opens this week but runs through July 19th, if you would like to do a story I'm sure I could send you a few photos. Here is the website with the info www.nbfestivaltheatre.com Thanks, Karen Kalunian”

Peter Pan flies on to the stage

For those who love the story of the boy who never grew up, the Theatre By The Sea will be opening its production of Peter Pan the musical on July 15, featuring Warwick resident Dominique Rose DeSimone. Based on the novel by J.M. Barrie, Peter Pan follows Peter and Tinkerbell, Wendy, Michael and John to the small island of Neverland, where they share their adventures with the lost boys, Indians, pirates and the dreaded Captain Hook! Songs include “Never, Never Land,” “I Wont Grow Up” and “I’m Flying.” This tale is not just for children; it’s for everyone willing to believe in their imagination and a little bit of magic. Ocean State Theatre Company is pleased to welcome Gary John La Rosa, who directed Smokey Joe’s Cafe, I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change, and Always Patsy Cline at Theatre By The Sea prior to its closing in 2003. He will be joined by music director, Aaron McAllister, who did the music direction for last season’s productions of George M! and Evita. Choreographer, Ann-Cooley-Presley, who was a line captain and choreographer for the Radio City Rockettes is on board as well. The play will also star New Yorker Cary Michele Miller, as Peter. Actor Peter S. Adams of Salem, Mass., is behind the dual roles of Mr. Darling and Captain Hook. Rebecca Barko of Hamden, Conn., plays the role of Mrs. Darling, with Nicholas Mercurio of Rumford and Dylan Temel of Westerly portraying John and Michael Darling. Other locals include Lauren Avarista of Narragansett, Corinne Cannon and Caroline Jackson of Marlborough, Conn., Cassie Collinson of West Kingston, Albert Jennings of Pawtucket and Sarah Pothier of Rumford. Former Providence Journal reporter Ron Sarro returns to the company in the role of Mr. Smee. Dining is offered in the casual atmosphere of Bistro by the Sea, which is just a short walk to the theatre. Following performances on Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings, theatergoers can enjoy food and drinks at the Late Night Cabaret with Sabrina Blaze. Reservations are recommended for dinner and the cabaret. Listen up, Y members!

We know it doesn't feel like summer just yet, but we have to believe the 90-degree days are coming and when it does, get ready to take the kids to the Y for some great fun. The Okey Falls Spray Park will be open all summer long for fun in the sun and includes different elements that will spray, dump and splash water. It's the perfect way for the entire family to cool off! Spray Park Hours are Monday through Friday, 5 to 8 p.m., Saturdays and Sundays 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Hours are weather permitting, so if there is thunder and lightning, the park will be closed. Be sure to bring bathing suits, towels and sunscreen. The Kent County YMCA Beach will be open to members throughout the summer season for the first time. In addition to the Spray Park, members will enjoy swimming in fresh water ponds and building castles in the sand. Beaches will be open Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5 to 7 p.m. and Saturdays and Sundays from 12 to 4 p.m. Non-members can get a daily pass; check-in is required at the Kent County YMCA Welcome Center.

Neighbors to host yard sale Sunday for Cady

Warwick residents Kerri Mark and Cara Hanoum are doing their part to help Cady Smith. We told you about Cady. She is the little girl with cerebral palsy who is going to Duke medical center later this month for a stem cell transplant that could give her a better life. Kerri and Cara live on Vernon Street in Warwick, just a few streets over from the Beacon office, were talking after reading Meg Fraser's story about Cady and wondered what they could do to help. The idea of a yard sale was mentioned but when could they have it? “It seemed like every day we wanted to do was no good,” said Kerri. “We had to compete with Father's Day, Cady's breakfast, the holiday weekend and then Cady's car show.” They knew they were cutting it close (Cady leaves for Duke July 19), but Kerri and Cara finally decided on July 12. Stop by and say “Hi” and see if you can find some cool house wares, clothing or other stuff. While we're on the subject, remember that Cady's Car Show and Silent Auction is this Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Texas Roadhouse restaurant in Cranston. We heard Rhode Island Rentals here in Warwick is donating its dunk tank for the event. Several Cranston police officers agreed to be dunked for the cause. We challenge some of our Warwick’s finest to see if they can dunk a few. For more information, visit www.cadyscause.blogspot.com.
