After topping expectations in its second year, 401Gives is readying to return next April 1 with some new elements and even bigger goals that will help uplift Rhode Island’s nonprofit sector. And for nonprofit organizations who want to participate and raise funds for their vital work, registration is now open online at 401gives.org, with special trainings already scheduled to help them get the most out of their 401Gives experience. Growing to become the state’s largest single day of giving, 401Gives - homage to Rhode Island’s only zip code and the April 1 day it’s held - made its first appearance in 2020.
Created and powered by United Way and supported by local sponsors, the unified day helps nonprofits share their stories while making it easy for the community to donate directly to any of more than 400 causes. For 2022, United Way has set the ambitious goal of raising $4 million in just 24-hours. During 401Gives in 2022, the community, and particularly area companies, will have new ways to get involved with the day. Among them is a Business Fundraiser element, enabling any area business or for-profit entity to create a profile on 401gives.org to encourage their employees and patrons to give to charities making an impact locally. The add-on is aimed to help businesses support the philanthropic interests of their stakeholders, incorporate
matching gift opportunities, and allow others to learn about the causes that are meaningful to their colleagues and customers. Business Fundraiser toolkits are available, featuring incentive ideas, communications templates, sample social media posts, and more.
“That 401Gives has led to more than $4.5 million for local nonprofits
in just two years underscores how much Rhode Islanders appreciate the invaluable work these organizations are doing day in and day out,” said Cortney Nicolato, United Way’s president and CEO. “Our state’s nonprofits need support now more than ever, and I’m hopeful our next
401Gives is our most successful yet.”
For returning and new participant nonprofits, United Way has scheduled a series of 401Gives trainings and workshops to share insights and best practices. The first is a virtual ‘Open House’ on Nov. 17 geared toward nonprofits new to 401Gives and those in need of a logistics refresher. It is followed by a Dec. 16 session looking at the back-end capabilities (adding photos and stories, sending emails
and thank you notes) of a nonprofit’s individual fundraising page.
