Allegations against Mayor Hopkins undermine trust in City Governmen

Posted

To the Editor,

When voters place their trust in elected officials by voting for them, and particularly when those officials assume the responsibilities of the office, they must pledge an oath of office. The oath typically varies by level of government and position, but all oaths of office in America typically include a commitment to serving the people faithfully and with the utmost integrity.

In the four years of agony for anyone who has paid close attention to Cranston city government, Mayor Ken Hopkins has proven time and again that he believes his exceptional vision and leadership means he is beyond reproach from the very voters who elected him to office. Whether it’s the tragedy of Budlong Pool, underfunding our schools or the latest scandal.

Now the Mayor has allegedly stolen a car with no good explanation for why he thought that was okay, or why the city solicitor was involved in what was clearly a personal matter. He has minimally, based on what we know (and he has not refuted), driven the car illegally, uninsured and unregistered on multiple occasions, yet not a single word he has spoken on the matter has clarified anything. In fact his comments only raise more questions.

The people of Cranston deserve honest answers. The public’s trust in city government and the equal enforcement of law depend upon it.
