With all the stressors we’ve been experiencing over the last 18 months, there is no better no better time than now to bring aromatherapy into your life. The benefits range from feelings of contentment and relaxation to sharpened memory performance and a decrease in cortisol levels.

Normal levels of cortisol are good for you. Your body releases cortisol when you wake up in the morning or exercise. These levels can help regulate your blood pressure and blood sugar levels and even strengthen your heart muscle. In small doses, the hormone can heighten memory, increase your immune system and lower sensitivity to pain.

When we have heightened levels cortisol, it can be damaging. Weight gain is directly linked to high cortisol levels. The danger of a fast-paced culture makes many of us constantly in high-stress mode. If your body experiences chronic stress, you may begin to feel unpleasant and even dangerous effects, such as fatigue, irritability, intestinal problems and poor sleep.

Aromatherapy can help you relax. Diffusing lavender into the air is a wonderful way to prepare for bedtime. Lemongrass is also great. You can put the essential oils in a spray bottle and use it as a linen and room spray. I’ve been working with some local senior centers to offer a workshop about the benefits of essential oils. It will be fun and you will make your own spray… I’ll keep you posted!
