Beach fees, yay or nay?

We are blessed in Warwick. We have lots of beautiful beaches, each one bringing a different feel. Some are on ponds and some have ocean views.

The beaches owned by the city with a view of the ocean are Conimicut Beach, Oakland Beach and City Park Beach. I love them all for different reasons.

Conimicut is my favorite. It has sweeping views of Providence and a lighthouse. The sand is filled with lots of shells and sea glass. It’s a great place to bring kids to hunt for these treasures. I recommend water shoes to protect your feet. There is also a small playground for the kiddos. There is usually a frozen lemonade truck in the parking lot. There is nothing more refreshing after a hot day on the beach!

Oakland Beach is a fun, funky beach complete with a Boardwalk. This is a great beach to go if you’d like to enjoy some yummy food. Iggy’s, long a staple in Warwick, has a walk-up window for beach snacks and ice cream. They also have a restaurant with a beautiful view and a full menu of delicious foods. Every week there is a great coupon in this paper that you can use at Iggy’s. I often use the doughboy coupon and my grandkids love giving out the extras to the other children on the beach.

City Park is also beautiful and includes a path for hiking or biking. This year for the first time, the city of Warwick is requiring the purchase of beach passes. These passes are to park, not to access the beach. The fees are reasonable and available at the Warwick Public Library. Unfortunately, the city ran out of passes early on, so they won’t be available until this week.

I don’t have a problem with the fee as long as it translates to better upkeep and control at the beaches. Oftentimes, the beaches are full of liter left behind by guests.

The other problem that I think would make a beach stay pleasant for everyone is to limit the volume of radios. Not everyone likes the same music. I’m talking about music so loud that your bones are vibrating from the bass!

So, time will tell. Let’s see if the city uses this money to improve the experience for the guests. This delayed the start date for charging a fee. Once things get running, we will see.
