Bubbie’s — a truly authentic Jewish deli

I have been hoping and praying for a truly authentic Jewish delicatessen to find its way to Rhode Island.

At last, we have Bubbie’s -- located at 727 Hope St., on Providence’s East Side.

The market section is loaded with Jewish foods that are difficult to find in Rhode Island: apple kugel, Israeli salad, schnitzel, beigels challah, gefilte fish and a variety of fresh meats, poultry, breads, dairy and other Kosher products.

The deli department is at the back of the store, where Bubbie’s famous corned beef and pastrami sandwiches are freshly made and heated if you wish.

The “small” sandwiches ($14.99) are five ounces of freshly cut meats served on rye or rye with seeds bread. The large sandwiches feature ten ounces of meat ($18.99).

Sandwiches ae accompanied by a dill pickle and your choice of potato or macaroni salad or cole slaw.

In addition to a variety of other sandwiches, Bubbie’s has two specialties: “Ruuuuben” and Raaaachel,” at $19.99 and $18.99.

While these sandwiches may seem a bit pricey, they are like nothing else you will find outside of New York City.

Joyce and I shared the corned beef and pastrami sandwiches and agreed that both meats were as tasty and tender as any we have had anywhere.

The coleslaw was creamy and fresh.

The coup de resistance was the potato salad.

“What was that taste?” I asked Joyce, who loved it as much as I did, but couldn’t identify it.

I called the deli and was told it was cumin. Being a potato salad lover, I found it to be a delightful addition to the dish, and enough to make me buy a big dish on my return visit.

Bubbie’s is open Monday and Tuesday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Wednesday and Thursday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.; and Friday and Sunday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Closed Saturdays.

The restaurant’s phone number is 272-4835. They also do catering, and sell meats, salads and dishes by the pound.
