Buttonwoods Brewery celebrates Oktoberfest

Posted

Oktoberfest is an annual event that has roots in Germany due to it originating there to ring in the fall season. To this day, the festival takes place in the country’s capital city of Munich for 16 to 18 days from mid-September until early October at a fairground known as Theresienwiese which is located within the borough of Ludwigsvorstadt-Isarvorstadt. It’s considered to be an important part of Bavarian culture with large quantities of beer under the same name as the event being consumed while visitors enjoy numerous attractions such as amusement rides and a variety of games along with a large spread of traditional foods. Over the past few decades, Oktoberfest has garnered worldwide fame with numerous establishments and cities joining in on the festivities.

Over on 530 Wellington Avenue in Cranston, the folks at Buttonwoods Brewery will be throwing their own Oktoberfest on September 17 starting at 1pm. It’s the brewery’s fourth edition of the event and they’ll be teaming up with the Origin Beer Project to put it on.

“We look forward to our annual Oktoberfest event every year because not only is it the kickoff to our favorite season, it is also the time we release one of our favorite beers,” says Buttonwoods’ Tasting Room Manager Jennie Paquin. “Our Oktoberfest is a German style Marzen that is malt forward and roasty but with a light body and a clean crisp finish. Drinking it makes me feel like putting on my favorite cozy flannel and crunching freshly fallen leaves under my boots. This year we will be celebrating by hanging out on the parking lot ‘Biergarten’, enjoying

German inspired foods from Our Table ‘Cue and Comfort and playing some outdoor patio games. We’ll also be listening to live music from Jake Wasson M.D. and The Day Drinkers and of course sipping on beers from both Buttonwoods and our housemates Origin Beer Project.”

Wasson is a singer-songwriter who has recently evolved his music into a unique form of poetic punk blues while being originally from Springfield, Missouri and currently a Cranston resident. He’s been playing mostly around Providence over the past few years either on stage at one of the city’s many venues or busking on the street. The Day Drinkers are a power trio headed by local music scene veteran Matt Martin on guitar and vocals. The band plays a mix of covers and originals and they’ve recently performed at establishments such as Thames Waterside Bar & Grill in Bristol and The 133 Club in East Providence. Both acts compliment each other pretty well so it’ll be a treat to see some musical talent while indulging in craft beer and other aspects of the event.

Apparently lederhosen and flannel are the encouraged attire by Buttonwoods via their event page for Oktoberfest on Facebook so keep that in mind if you plan on going. Also, admission for the event is free and it’s both family friendly and dog friendly so feel free to bring some relatives and your dog. It looks like it’ll be a prime opportunity to experience an international event with some local flair going along with it.
