Corrente pulls off upset to win heavyweight state title

Posted

His name is Will Corrente.
He’s a big strong kid from Bristol. At 14 years of age, he has played three years of football, three years of wrestling and has been boxing since he was seven. Will is an eighth grader at Kickemuit Middle School, in Warren, where he wrestles in the heavyweight division (275 pounds and under) and on Sunday, Feb. 2nd he became the Rhode Island State Champion.
The 2025 Rhode Island Interscholastic League Middle School Championships were held at North Kingstown High School on Saturday and Sunday with the Championship Heavyweight Division match saved for last. Will beat out the No. 2 seed Luc Cournoyer to advance to the championship match. Will’s record going into the final contest was 18-3, ranking him a respectful No. 7 in the league.
His opponent was No. 1 ranked Blake Morosetti, a hometown favorite from Davisville/North Kingstown sporting a perfect record of 15 wins and no losses.
His father told him “Take a breath. Block out the crowd and remember, he’s in there with YOU!”
The three-round match started with the undefeated champion taking an early lead of 5-0, bringing the hometown crowd to their feet cheering loudly, but that’s when Will’s determination, dedication, hard work and three months of seven-days-a-week-training kicked in. By the time the match was over Will had the victory, winning 20-8 and he even won over the crowd who kept screaming “Will! Will! WILL!!”
Their voices were thunderous. Of this upset victory, Will’s coach Trever King exclaimed “I think Will shocked the world in the tournament’s last match and sent the entire gym into a frenzy.”
Thousands in attendance were screaming Will’s name and just as we all believed it was coming to an end, the judges had another surprise announcement. Not only had Will won this most-impossible contest, but he was also being presented with the Most Outstanding Wrestler Award of the entire league.
Will Corrente is a Rhode Island champion. Will is also living proof that persistence and determination are the keys to success. Will set an example for us all.

Richard Corrente Sr., Will’s grandfather, Warwick, R.I.
