Cranston earns JDL hockey title

Cranston’s middle school hockey team would go 3-0 in the Junior Development League playoffs to win the AA Championship last week.

It was Cranston’s first team to play in the JDL, which has become popular across Rhode Island over the past decade, and it quickly made its presence felt as it rolled to the AA crown.

Cranston would cruise to a 7-1 win over Warwick to open the playoffs. Jacob Case had a big game, leading the way with five goals while Aidan Regine and Adam Shone added one each.

Cranston would next beat Mount St. Charles in a 5-2 decision. Regine scored a pair of goals while Jacob Bovay and Luke DiMascolo scored as well.

Cranston would then wrap things up by edging Lincoln, 4-3. Bovay led the team with two goals while Regine and Shone added other goals.

The team improved as the winter progressed and by seasons end was competing with some of the best teams in the state. Cranston’s roster was made up of kids from Hope Highlands, Park View, Western Hills and Immaculate Conception.

Cranston West grad and coach Anthony Simeone was proud of his club and the steps forward it took this year.

“It was really exciting. It was great to see the kids come together as the season went on. Especially with kids being from different schools. Many of them were not familiar with each other, even some kids from the same school did not play on the same team together. It’s a long season, so the progress that they were able to make, for all the hard work to pay off, it was great to see the group come together and play well,” said Simeone.

Although the team will be seeing a large core of eighth graders heading to the high school level, it will be returning some key sixth and seventh graders with hopes of also adding some new youngsters as well.

“We’re hoping that this becomes a feeder system for the high school. We’re losing eight kids, but we have a lot of sixth graders coming up that want to play and there are also kids that did not play this year, but now will want to try to play,” said Simeone.

The Cranston JDL AA Champions included: Coaches Anthony Simeone, Joey Simeone. Players Aidan Regine, Jacob Case, Ethan Pimental, Adam Shone, Tate Exter, Alex Barriera, Luke DiMascolo, Judah Sencer, Chase Santos, Jacob Bovay, Luke Hambly, Johna Nawrocki, Bryce Crance.
