Teens in grades 6-12 are invited to participate in Central Library’s pumpkin painting contest on Oct. from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Each contestant will get a pumpkin, paints, craft supplies and an hour and a half to create their masterpiece. Pumpkins will then go through two rounds of judging to pick the winner. Space is limited and registration is required.
Celebrate all Things Strange in this hour-long craft and snack program on Oct. 29 from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. at Cranston’s Central Library. This program is intended for kids in grades 4-8. Participants will be able to craft like it’s 1986 at different stations (including a waffle-making station).
Stroll through Rocky Point Farm’s enchanting pumpkin path and enjoy over 300 candle lit, hand carved pumpkins. Trail is lined with jack-o’-lanterns, tiki torches and camp fires. Watch our living statues and collect a Halloween treat! This non scary event is perfect for young children and their families. Bring at least one small flashlight for your group. Trail is cleared of sticks and the grass is mowed, but there are some bumpy areas along the way. Great Fun for the whole family! Oct. 27-30, Trail open 6 – 9:15pm. Rhode Island Model Train Expo sponsored by the Little Rhody Division of the National Model Railroad Association will be held Sunday, Nov. 6 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Guy L. Lefebvre Community Center, 1277 Main St., Coventry. The show features operating layouts in N, HO, O, and G scales. There will be select vendor tables. Tickets are $6 for adults and children under 12 and Scouts in uniform are free. There is a $20 maximum per family.
Come together at the Warwick City Park Ball Fields on Thanksgiving day to benefit the Kent Hospital Employee Emergency Fund. The Music on the Hill scholarship directly supports the study of classical music performance. Awards will be disbursed directly to the winner’s designated instructor, ensemble program, summer opportunity, school, conservatory or college music fee. The first prize includes $400 and a performance opportunity in Music on the Hill’s 2023 festival. The second prize is $200. Applicants must be Rhode Island residents between ages 13 and 18. This scholarship includes all instruments and voice. Chamber groups may apply together and share the prize. The application includes a four to eight minute recorded video audition. Cranston Public Library’s Auburn Branch will hold a monster mash family storytime at 2:30 p.m. on Oct. 29. There will be stories, songs and rhymes all about monsters. This family storytime is geared toward children ages two to eight and their caregivers, but all are welcome. Space is limited and registration is required. If weather permits, this storytime will begin outdoors and then participants will go indoors to make snacks. The ninth annual 2022 Park View Veterans Day 5K Run/Walk and 1 Mile Kids Run, an annual event designed to bring honor and recognition to Veterans Day, will be held at Roger Williams Park on Friday, Nov. 11. Proceeds from the event will benefit programs for the school throughout the year and as a means of giving back to a worthwhile cause, Operation Stand Down RI.
The One Mile Kids Run will take place in the Park on a specially designed course. This race will begin at 8:30 a.m. The race is open to all elementary and middle school students. Cost for this race is $10 (T-shirts to the first 50 entries for this race).
Start and finish of the 5k race at the Park Avenue entrance to Roger Williams Park across from Park View Middle School. The 5k starts at 9:30 a.m.

The Cranston Public Library’s used book sale returns Nov. 5 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The library is currently accepting donations of books, DVDs and CDs for the sale. Donations must be in good condition and can be dropped off at the Central and William Hall Libraries through Oct.20.

Cranston Public Library welcomes Sandra Moyer and Janet Cullen Ragno, authors of Cranston Revisited and Cranston Through Time to Central Library on Oct. 22 at 2:30 p.m. for a photographic journey that chronicles the history of Cranston and its citizens’ lives.
Cranston Revisited features vintage photos along with captions describing how people throughout our city’s history lived, worked, traveled, worshiped, studied, played and were governed. Cranston Through Time pairs vintage photos of buildings and landmarks in the various villages that make up Cranston with modern photos of what is now located at the same sites. You’ll get a chance to test yourself on how well you know your city.
The authors will also share the challenges they faced while working on the first book and how they overcame them while writing the second book. This event is free and open to the public. Cranston Public Library welcomes Wendy Z Lewis, author of Jump in the Holes and Other Small Ways to Live Your Biggest Life, to Central Library on Nov. 1 at 6:30 p.m.
Lewis will share the curious story of her blog-turned-book and discuss “Three Small Ways to Live Your Biggest Life” and read selections from her book, sign copies, and give away a free copy to one lucky attendee.

The 1916 Committee is raising money to erect a monument on the site of the Famine Memorial in Providence, in honor of the 10 young men who died on hunger strike in the spring of 1981. The latest fundraiser will be on Oct. 22 at Patrick’s Pub on Smith Street in Providence. The Irish Ramblers will provide music beginning at 3 p.m. There will be a “split the pot” raffle, a silent auction for the Memorial Quilt and food provided by Patrick’s Pub. The event is open to the public. There is no admission charge but donations are gratefully accepted.
The Rotary Club of Cranston will host its Halloween Touch a Truck event on Oct. 30 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Garden City Center. Come explore big trucks along with crafts, face painting, balloon animals and more. Halloween costumes are encouraged. $10 donation per family.

The City of Cranston will once again hold its Veterans Day Parade at 11:30 a.m. on Nov. 11. The parade will kick off in front of Legion Bowl on Park Avenue, continue past City Hall up to Heyward Street and past Rolfe Street.
