Cranston Police Chief Colonel Michael Winquist has announced that the department’s Traffic Unit is investigating a fatal crash that occurred Thursday morning on Laten Knight Road.

On Aug. 12, at approximately 8:02 a.m., several calls were received at the Cranston Police Department Dispatch Center concerning a single-car crash in the area of 504 Laten Knight Road. The callers reported hearing what sounded like a car traveling at a rate of speed, then a crash and explosion.

The responding Officer observed a 2010 Chevrolet Cobalt SS with extensive front-end damage up against a tree, according to a press release from the Cranston Police Department.

The driver was lying next to the vehicle, which was fully engulfed in flames. The Cranston Fire Department extinguished the fire and pronounced the sole occupant/driver dead at the scene.

Based on a preliminary investigation, it appears the vehicle was traveling south on Laten Knight Road at a high rate of speed. Once the car approached a sharp bend, it exited the roadway and struck a tree head-on. Investigators did not observe skid marks or other evidence indicating the driver attempted to slow down at the curve before leaving the road, according to a press release from the Cranston Police Department.

The driver has not been positively identified and will require the assistance of the Rhode Island Medical Examiner’s Office, who has taken custody the body, according to a press release from the Cranston Police Department.
