To the Editor:
Empty buses. Everywhere I look I see empty RIPTA buses lumbering along the city streets and highways of Rhode Island.
It begs the question: If these behemoth buses aren’t full, what’s the point of running them? Has RIPTA become just another taxpayer funded rip-off?
Each year, the agency receives hundreds of millions of dollars in taxpayer subsidies. I’ll bet Uber or Lyft vouchers could be provided to those who do rely on RIPTA. They would get a more direct service at a fraction of the cost to taxpayers.
Millions of dollars to run empty buses. I think RIPTA CEO Scott Avedisian, who apparently doesn’t take the bus himself, has some explaining to do.
