Falcons send off senior duo

The Cranston West boys tennis team is winding down its spring season and celebrated its Senior Night last week.

The Falcons sent off senior duo Liam McCormack and Cooper Goodwin, who are each captains of the team and have been staples on the roster over the past two seasons. The Falcons entered the week with a 3-9 record overall this spring.

Goodwin, who has been with the team for three seasons, was honored to be the team’s captain for his final go around.

“I feel like I got robbed of a year (during COVID) but I feel that the three years that I have been here have been amazing. This has been my favorite part of every school year. To be the captain especially, it’s the perfect conclusion to my high school tennis arch,” said Goodwin in front of a crowd that included teammates, coaches, administrators and family.

Goodwin is close friends with McCormack and was the reason that the later joined the team two seasons ago.

“It’s been a wild ride, I’ve met a lot of very interesting people. I’m going to miss playing on the team next year, it’s been a blast. But I’m going to continue playing and getting better,” said McCormack in front of the crowd as well.

First-year head coach Brenden O’Connell appreciated the leadership and commitment of his two seniors as they wrap up the season and get ready for graduation.

“He really can bring us together, cheer us up whether it is a win or loss, or just having some fun. We really appreciate Liam being with us,” said McDonnell.

McDonnell added of Goodwin: “He has a way of getting himself into a third set every match, that’s the way he plays, but as long he plays hard and plays tough, that’s all we care about.”

The visiting East Greenwich Avengers would edge the Falcons in a 4-3 decision on the afternoon.

West’s top singles players Connor Ainley won his match 6-2, 6-0, while Mason Harris won his singles match 4-6, 6-4, 6-3. Kovin Rasombath took a win at fourth singles by a score of 6-2, 3-6, 6-2.
