Guzman signs to play D1 baseball

This past Wednesday, senior Randy Guzman signed his letter of intent to further his education and play baseball at a Division-I college. In the Cranston High School East library, surrounded by supporters, Guzman announced his commitment to Central Connecticut State University.

Playing in the NCAA’s D-I Northeast Conference, the CCSU Blue Devils have had a successful and competitive team in years past. The university has been conference champion seven times across the past two decades, including most recently in 2021.

Following 2022 East graduate Anthony Fernandez’s commitment last year to Chipola College, a top Junior College baseball program in the country, Guzman’s signing marks the second high-level commitment for the school’s baseball program in two years.

During the ceremony, Cranston East baseball coach Gary Bucci said, “This is as good as winning a state championship. This is so rewarding -  as an adult, as a parent, as a coach, as hopefully a mentor…Randy will be successful in whatever path he decides.”

Immediately after the ceremony, Timothy Yean had the opportunity to interview the man of the hour. Guzman stated, “Since I was a kid, I always loved baseball…the first time I touched a baseball I was like (4-years-old) and I just fell in love with it.”

When talking about his decision to commit to Central Connecticut State, Guzman said, “When I went on a visit I knew it felt like home to me, they made me feel welcomed.”

Guzman concluded the interview by thanking those closest to him, “I’m very thankful for my family overall, my parents, they’ve always been supportive of me. My friends have always been there for me, and my coaches as well. I’ve always had a supportive coach.”
