CWLL 10’s battling through regional tournament

The Cranston Western Little League 10-year-old All-Stars are in the thick of their regional tournament that is being held up on Hope Road and started by going 1-1.

CWLL started things off on Sunday night by beating Vermont 6-3.

CWLL would explode at the plate for four runs in the second inning to take a 5-1 lead which would be all it needed the rest of the way. JJ Hamilton, Ashton Pelagali and Kameron Monahan all knocked in runs in the victory while Monahan got the win on the mound, throwing four innings and picking up six strikeouts.

“They are 10 years old, it was Sunday night and it was packed (against Vermont). They were a little nervous. But they made up for the lack of hitting by throwing strikes and making all the plays on defense. It was super important for them to get a game like that under their belt,” said CWLL manager Sean Hart.

CWLL went on to face Connecticut in the second game on Monday and would fall 14-4. Connecticut would take an early 3-1 lead but CWLL battled back to briefly regain the 4-3 advantage.

Connecticut would then score 11 unanswered runs, including eight in the fifth inning, to run away with the win.

Nolan Winters, Monahan, Brad Dempsey and Nazlin Benzan knocked in CWLL’s runs while Winters pitched 3 1/3 innings with two strikeouts.

“Things didn’t go our way tonight but I have been happy and feel that they have played well overall. That’s the game of baseball, no team is perfect and every team is going to lose at some point. They played well overall, they fought from behind, a few bounces just didn’t go our way today,” Hart said after the loss to Connecticut.

CWLL was back in action on Wednesday to face Massachusetts. The team will wrap up its tournament on Thursday evening.

Hart hopes to see his team bounce back from the tough loss and looks forward to seeing how far it can go in the coming days.

“They’re having fun, and I think they will be ready to go on Wednesday. They are looking forward to the chance to finish their season,” said Hart. “I told them that their season is over either way this week, so they might as well go out there and give it their best and if it works out, great, and if it doesn’t, then they haven’t accomplished less than they already have.”
