Bolts get quarterfinals win over PCD in OT

The Lady Thunderbolts edged the Providence Country Day / Blackstone Valley Prep Co-Op 8-7 last Wednesday during the Division III Girls Lacrosse Quarterfinal at Cranston Stadium.

Cranston East freshman Alyssa Pereira recorded the game-winning tally with just 38.7 seconds remaining in sudden-death overtime after an assist from Ann Notarianni, a junior.

“I was really nervous, but it was great,” Pereira said after scoring the winning tally.

Lily Tillinghast, a freshman, led the Lady Bolts with three goals, while Pereira, and Jenna Lees, a senior, added two goals each. Nevari Vargas, also a senior, added one goal.

East went into the playoffs as a No. 3 seed and PCD was the No. 6 seed, but all of the teams in the league were close to even.

“The thing was, we all played each other really tight,” East head coach Howard Chun said. “We beat them by one goal the first time at PCD, and so they were pumped to come back and take it from us here and we knew that. And so we had to play hard.”

“But what I love about our team is that we still managed to rise to the occasion when we lost two of our best players,” Chun continued. “Norah (Flinn), she’s probably our best player and to lose her with so much time left in the game, but we didn’t panic, we didn’t fall apart, we held it together and figured out a way to win it. So, it was a team effort in this case.”

During the match, both Flinn and Vargas were whistled for four yellow cards (two each) and that forced the Lady Bolts to play two players down for some time.

Flinn went out with five minutes remaining in the first half and Nevari went out 10 minutes into the second half.

“So, we were down one player for a long time, then two players, then back to one, and then none because they lost their players,” Chun said. “They (PCD) fought hard, so they were getting yellow cards too, because they had four eventually. We got there first, not the claim to fame you want to have, but it was a hard fought game.”

Kylee Hicks topped the PCD offense with four goals. Eloise Wetherby followed with two goals and Jennifer Sturges scored one goal.

The Lady Bolts played No. 2 East Providence in the semifinal round on Tuesday, but that score was unavailable at press time. The Lady Townies blanked Johnston 17-0 in the Quarterfinal Round on Saturday.

Pereira was confident heading into the semifinal round, however.

“We’re going to win,” Pereira said with a smile.

The D-III Girls LAX Championship will be held at Cranston Stadium, so that is extra incentive for the Lady Bolts to get back there and challenge for it.
