Aug. 26, Garden City 75th Anniversary Block Party will be held on Sat., Aug. 26 from 1 – 6 p.m. at Garden City Plaza. 75 years of fun, shopping, music & community. Celebrate the last 75 years and celebrate many more to come. Enjoy 1940's & 50's themed live music and entertainment, a beer and wine garden, sidewalk sales and samplings from our businesses, games and scavenger hunts for kids and adults, and round off the last 75 years with us with a champagne toast at the Gazebo.

Aug. 31, Tea and Tour Program  - The Cranston Historical Society is hosting an end of summer Tea with Tour program will on Thurs., Aug. 31, at 6:30 p.m., and invites you to enjoy a relaxing evening at the historic Governor Sprague Mansion, 1351 Cranston St., Cranston.  A brief introduction of the history of the Sprague Family and A&W Sprague Textile Manufacturing Co. will be shared. Weather permitting, an additional tour of the Sprague Carriage House may be available.  The Tour with Tea program is designed to be a small, intimate gathering and includes tea of the evening and a delightful sweet. Sept. 9, Vasa Family Fun Day is being held on Sat., Sept. 9, from noon - 5 p.m. at Little Rhody Vasa Park, 10 Boswell Trail, in Foster.  This event, being sponsored by R.I. District #3, Vasa Order of America, promises to be a great time for the whole family.  The park opens at noon with a flag ceremony at 1 p.m.  An authentic Swedish meatball lunch will be served, continuously, from 1 – 4 p.m.  (The lunch includes Swedish meatballs, gravy, mashed potatoes, asparagus, Lingonberry sauce, bread, and butter).  A full bar is located on the premises.  Music will be provided by DJ Big Bill.  Other food vendors and craft vendors will be available.  There will be raffle prizes and you don’t even have to be present to win!  There will also be bocce, corn hole, volleyball, basketball, cookie decorating, the balloon twister, horseshoes, and Tombola.  For the kids throughout the day, there will be a piñata, train rides, face painting, egg toss, pie eating contest, playground, sandcastle contest, and the ever-popular SAWDUST PILE!

Sept. 9, The Hope Historical Society Annual Meeting will be held on Sat., Sep. 9, at 2 p.m., at the Howland Barn, 35 Ryefield Road, Hope. The Hope Historical Society invites the community as they kick off a new program year with a 2023 Archives Presentation  The election of Hope Historical Society officers will take place during the Annual Meeting with the Archives Presentation to follow. Sept. 9, Ocean State Orchid Society Auction will be held on Sat., Sept. 9, from 12:30 p.m. (preview), start time: 1 p.m., at Rocky Hill Grange, 1340 South County Train, East Greenwich.  Entrance in rear. A variety of Phalaenopsis, Brassavola, and other orchid genera will be available for auction. Come purchase orchids not commonly available at big box stores and house plant nurseries and to speak to an OSOS member to get care instructions to help ensure growing success! Complimentary refreshments available. Public is welcome and encouraged to attend.

Sept 10, The Kerri McClean “Vision of Hope” Cancer Walk will be held on Sun., Sept. 10, at Warwick City Park, Asylum Road, Buttonwoods/Warwick, with registration at 9:30 a.m.  Registration fee:  $30pp. The 14th annual walk is to benefit women with gynecological cancer and their families.  Proceeds go to the “Women in Need Fund” and the “Integrative Care Service Fund,” programs at Women & Infants Hospital in memory of Kerri McClean who succumbed to a five-year battle with cervical cancer in 2009.  Baskets and gift cards will be raffled.  Refreshments will be provided. Sept. 11, The Comedy Course - The Comedy Course is returning for a 6th year, every Mon. night for 6-weeks. Three instructors, with over 100 years of combined stage experience, will guide you on a 6-week journey from writing your first joke to performing your debut comedy routine. Sept. 13, NAMI-RI: Fall "Family-to Family" Course and Support Groups The Rhode Island Chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI-RI) is now accepting registration for their Fall session of which begins Wed., Sept.13, at 6:30 p.m. This is a free, virtual, 8-session educational program for family, significant others and friends of people with mental health conditions. It is a designated evidence-based program, which means that research shows that the program significantly improves the coping and problem-solving abilities of the people closest to a person with a mental health condition. Month of Oct., Cranston Tree will hold a fall planting in October. Free trees are now available for Cranston property owners. The seven- to eight-foot-tall trees are planted by a nursery in front yards, but not between the sidewalk and the street. The effort is a project of the West Bay Land Trust.  Application forms are available by emailing  cranstontree@gmail.com or calling 941-1264. Forms may also be downloaded at westbaylandtrust.org/cranstontree. The planting program, financed by the City of Cranston and the West Bay Land Trust, has planted more than 300 trees in Cranston parks and front yards. Trees lower the temperature nearby, reduce storm water runoff, clean the air and help combat climate change.

Oct. 4, Brown University Lecture Series presents: Maggie Millner. Maggie Millner, poet and author of Couplets delivers a lecture on Oct. 4,  at 6 p.m., at Brown University. Oct. 7, Spartan DEKA MILE: Operation Enduring Warrior (OEW) Fundraiser will be held on Oct. 7, at It Starts Here Fitness (ISHFitness), 380 Jefferson Blvd.,  Suite G, Warwick, from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.  Looking for police, fire, military, troopers, and civilians to compete in a friendly competition for a great cause.  Race individually or with a partner, and each racer will receive a DEKA T-shirt and medal.  50% of all ticket profits to benefit Operation Enduring Warrior (OEW). Oct. 14, Annual  No More Hunger Walk - A walk to call attention to food insecurity and raise funds for local food pantries  will be held on Sat., Oct. 14. Registration is at 9 a.m. and the walk begins at 10 a.m. Over $20,000 has been raised in the past two years. Every Monday, Parent Support Group takes place from 10 – 11 a.m., at The Huddle Center, 70 Gansett Ave., Cranston.  All Cranston parents, grandparents and guardians are invited to take part in this parent-led support group.  Discussions include: challenges, issues and concerns that all caregivers encounter.  Activities will be available for children while the meeting is taking place. We Make RI offer job seekers a chance to meet with employers, get career counseling, resume help and more. Every Saturday, Pawtuxet Village Farmers Market - The Pawtuxet Village Farmers Market, every Sat., 9 a.m. – 12 p.m., offers locally grown vegetables, eggs, fruit, meat, honey, cheese, baked goods, prepared foods, locally roasted coffee, and local packaged foods (kimchi, hot sauce, marinara, sauerkraut, seitan). The market features vegan and gluten-free options and local handmade goods. There will also be food trucks, live music, and occasional visits from community groups.

Oaklawn Grange Used Clothing Donation Shed in need of used clothing items at the Oaklawn Grange Donation Shed, 24 Searle Ave., Cranston.  Accepted items only: Used Clothing, Shoes, Sneakers, Belts, Purses, Linens, Pillowcases, Blankets, Curtains, and Stuffed Animals. Humans of Cranston is back for a second year after a successful first season, and is now accepting nominations! Over the last year, the project featured 19 resident stories in a Herald column, on OneCranston HEZ social media, and in a final book with the goal of showcasing and celebrating residents' community involvement, diversity, and unique life perspectives. This is an initiative of the OneCranston Health Equity Zone at CCAP in partnership with the Cranston Herald and local photographer, Tim McFate. NAMI-RI Offers Family Support Groups The RI chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI-RI) offers free support groups for families and friends of loved ones who are struggling with their mental health. The groups are led by trained facilitators who also have lived experience as family members themselves. The group meetings last about 1.5 hours, and everyone who participates in the meeting gets a chance to share.  The other members of the group try to offer help and resources, when appropriate, based on their own experiences. Amenity Aid – Volunteers Needed - We are looking for volunteers that would like to help us plan and staff community events, organize hygiene product collection drives and raise funds for Amenity Aid. If you are interested in doing any of the above or would like to be a member of our Community Outreach Committee, please contact Stacey Silva, Community Outreach Chair at Stacey@AmenityAid.org.

 Amenity Aid’s mission is to improve the health and wellbeing of vulnerable populations by creating access to essential hygiene products. Serving all of Rhode Island, we distribute toiletry necessities to those most vulnerable through our network of direct service agencies.

Hearts for Hospice - Visiting Nurse Home and Hospice (VNH&H) is asking for individuals to support their hospice programs by giving $20 or more to their Hearts for Hospice campaign. People can dedicate their gift to a loved one who is always in their heart; all dedications are listed on the organization’s website.
