Cub Scout Pack 4 (Gaspee Plateau) is hosting a clean up of the Warwick side of the Pawtuxet River Trail today from 6:00 p.m. until dark. We will be meeting adjacent to the woods in the Shaw’s parking lot at 320 WarwickAvenue. Shaw’s is donating supplies and allowing us to dispose of any waste collected in their dumpsters, and the Pawtuxet River Authority is also assisting with volunteers and supplies. This will be part of the International Coastal Cleanup (thanks to Save the Bay for pointing us to this seasonal event).
The Oakland Beach Association is hosting a steak fry this Saturday, Oct. 9, 5 pm, at the Little Rhody Boat Club, 315 Sea View Drive. Tickets to be purchased in advance are $20 per person. Proceeds will benefit the Association’s programs to support the children of Oakland Beach and other community projects. To purchase tickets, please call Ron Bergeron at 739-7733.
St. Mark’s Church Annual Pumpkin Patch on West Shore Road will be open Sunday, Oct. 10 to Oct. 31. Hours are Saturday and Sundays 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Weekdays they are open 12-6 p.m. and they are closed on Thursdays. Stop by to get your pumpkins, take pictures, and support the ministries of St. Mark’s. 10 percent of proceeds will be donated to the Elizabeth Buffum Chace Center.
The General Federation of Women’s Clubs (GFWC) Warwick Women’s Club will meet in-person on Tuesday, October 12 at 6:30 p.m. The Club meets on the second Tuesday of each month from September to May at the Elizabeth Buffum Chace Center in Warwick. Three new members will be installed at this meeting. If vaccinated, no masks required. All safety protocols will be taken to ensure your safety regarding Covid-19.
A walk to call attention to food insecurity and raise funds for local pantries and the West Bay Marketplace will be held on Saturday, October 16th. Registration begins at 9:00am at St Mark’s Episcopal Church 111 West Shore Road, Warwick. Several local groups and churches will be participating. Let’s have fun and scare up some fall spirit by decorating our light poles in the beautiful Norwood neighborhood. Show us your creativity, pride and holiday traditions using materials from home and craft supplies to create a unique scarecrow on your designated pole. This event will take place on Oct.16th. For a small $5 donation you will be given an assigned light pole near your home to decorate. Your creations will be judged and prizes will be awarded for the top three contestants. Winners will be announced at our Neighborhood Fall Festival on October 23rd at the Norwood field behind the Boys and Girls Club. More details to follow. The Gorton Classes of 1941-1955 will be having their luncheon on Wednesday, Oct. 10 at the Greenwood Inn Restaurant. On the menu will be a hot turkey plate, baked stuffed scrod, or eggplant parm. On Saturday, October 9th and 10th, the Woonasquatucket River Watershed Council (WRWC) invites you to hike and paddle in the watershed. October 9th at 10am hike through Connors Farm in Smithfield and then paddle the lower Woony through Downtown Providence on October 10th at 11:30am. These trips are part of the 2021-22 “Explore the Woonasquatucket” recreational series which offers guided tours of beautiful and historic sites throughout the Woonasquatucket River watershed, with paddle trips, hikes, and bike rides — while following State Covid- 19 guidelines. The Ocean State Orchid Society will host a program, “Growing Miniature Orchids in the Home,” on Saturday, Oct. 9, at 1 p.m. at Rocky Hill Grange, 1340 South County Trail, East Greenwich. Enter through rear of building. Cordelia Head of J&L Orchids will be speaking about household miniature orchid culture. Cordelia’s presentation is great for both the beginner and expert. Meals on Wheels of RI is in immediate need of volunteers for its Home-Delivered Meal Program in Warwick. Meals are delivered Monday through Friday between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. The program helps homebound seniors remain healthy, safe, and happy at home. From Sunday, November 7 to Tuesday, November 9, AARP is hosting a trip to Atlantic City. On the 7th, attendees will depart at 7:30 a.m. from the I-95 Park & Ride at Exit 6A, Coventry and travel to Atlantic City’s first casino, Resorts. Upon arrival, guests will receive $20 casino slot cash, $50 in food credits, and a casino show. The bus will return to RI around 7:30 p.m. on the 9th. The tour cost is $269 per person for a double room, $259 per person for a triple room, and $369 per person for a single room. The Warwick Public Library and the RI Family Literacy Initiative host English as a Second Language (ESL) classes starting on September 20. Practice reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills in small groups. NAMI Family-to-Family is a free 8- session educational program for families, significant others, and friends of people living with mental illness. It is a designated evidenced-based program.
