KIDNAPPING & INDECENT EXPOSURE

Warwick Police have arrested and charged a Providence man with kidnapping and indecent exposure following an incident at the Warwick Mall.

According to a Warwick Police press release, at 11:54 a.m., Dec. 7, officers were dispatched to the Warwick Mall located at 400 Bald Hill Road to investigate the report of a possible sexual assault.

“Upon arrival, officers spoke with a juvenile male who reported that he had been confined against his will in a restroom stall by an adult male suspect,” according to police. “He also reported that the adult male suspect exposed himself to the juvenile while in the stall.”

A subsequent investigation was conducted by the Warwick Police Department Detective Division.

“Through the course of this investigation, the adult male suspect was identified as a 48-year-old named Michael Medeiros of Providence,” according to the release, distributed by Capt. John McAniff, of the WPD Detective Division.

On Dec. 19, Medeiros was arrested and charged with Kidnapping and Indecent Exposure/Disorderly Conduct, according to police.

“The Kidnapping charge was due to Medeiros forcibly confining the juvenile against his will in the restroom stall,” McAniff wrote in the release. “Warwick Mall Security and Public Safety assisted the Warwick Police Department with this investigation. At this time, it is considered an isolated incident.”

Any potential witness “who may have heard or seen any part of this incident” on Dec. 7, is urged to contact the Warwick Police Department Detective Division at 401-468-4233.

DRUG POSSESSION

Around 1:54 a.m., Dec. 21, Warwick Police conducted a check of the Stop and Shop parking lot at 2470 Warwick Ave. Warwick Police Officer Nicholas P. DeLuca observed a 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee parked in the corner of the parking lot, closest to the street.

The lights were off, but there was a male passenger in the front seat.

“After completing a lap through the parking lot, I then observed the vehicle to exit the parking lot at a high rate of speed, entering onto Warwick Avenue Northbound,” DeLuca wrote in the arrest report.

DeLuca followed the vehicle, and says he watched it “drift over the double yellow center lane lines.” He initiated a traffic stop. He identified the driver as Brian P. Mellen, 57, of 72 Read St., Riverside.

“While speaking with him, I observed that Mellen was extremely nervous, as his hands were twitching and his head was shaking,” DeLuca wrote. “I also observed that his eyes were bloodshot and watery as he spoke in an excited and very rapid speech. It should be noted that Mellen’s pupils were dilated. When asked a question, Mellen would look away and mumble for several seconds prior to giving a response. He also kept trying to avoid eye contact, and was sweating.”

Police say they spotted a “cylindrical glass pipe sticking out between the driver’s seat and center console.”

“When asked about the pipe, Mellen stated that it was a crystal methamphetamine pipe and he had smoked crystal (meth) at (around 12:30 a.m.),” DeLuca wrote.

Police searched Mellen and his car. They reported finding, in addition to the pipe, a “clear plastic baggie, which had the name ‘Brian’ written on it in blue writing.”

“The plastic baggie contained another smaller clear plastic baggie, which contained a white crystal rock like substance, again known to be crystal methamphetamine,” DeLuca wrote.

Mellen was asked to consent to a series of standardized field sobriety tests and he agreed.

Following the tests, Mellen was placed under arrest. He was transported back to the Warwick Police Department. He refused to take a chemical breath test.

The suspected drugs were tested, and police said the test yielded a positive result for meth and weighed 1.4 grams. The glass pipe and residue were also logged in as evidence.

Mellen was charged with DUI of Liquor (BAC unknown) and one count of Possession of a Schedule I-V Controlled Substance. He also received a citation for Refusal to Submit to a Chemical Test (first offense).

NO TRESPASS

Around 7:35 a.m., Dec. 7, Warwick Police were dispatched to Walmart at 650 Bald Hill Road for a “subject to eject.”

Upon arrival at the scene, Warwick Police officers met with a store employee who told them “a customer caused a disturbance by trying to buy an item that was marked down for donation when repeatedly told not to do so,” according to the incident report.

“She stated that the customer recorded all interactions and threatened (to) put it on the internet if she did not get her way,” Warwick Police Officer Robert J. Canis-Langlais wrote in the report. “(The employee) stated that they would like (the customer) trespassed from this location.

Police identified the woman, Roberta Cronan, 34, of 29 Ostend St., Johnston.

“She was told to leave the store3 and was given a No Trespass Order,” police said.

DRIVING WITHOUT CONSENT OF OWNER

Around 10:47 p.m., Warwick Police responded to 2220 Warwick Ave. for the report of a suspicious vehicle. Background checks on the vehicle indicated it had been stolen out of Cranston.

Police found the red Chevrolet occupied by one man in the driver’s seat, at the Meadowbrook Terrace Apartments complex.

Police gave the man verbal instructions to exit the vehicle. He complied.

“It should be noted that I had (my) department issued taser out at this time, and kept it at the low ready position,” wrote Warwick Police Officer Connor R. Bemis.

The man was handcuffed, read his rights, and identified as Jason M. Cerrito, 36, of 24 Bracken St., Cranston.

Police confirmed the vehicle as stolen.

Cerrito told police that he “took his boss’s car,” according to police. “I though I was allowed to have it,” he told police, according to the report.

He was arrested and transported to Warwick Police Headquarters. He was held for morning arraignment for one charge of Driving Without Consent of Owner of Lessee.
