When most people think of hockey players, fighting, rough, tough guys come to mind. However, the Providence Bruins Fan Club has a soft side, and they showed it with a recent large donation to the EGAPL Heart of RI Animal Rescue League in Cranston, on Friday, March 4.
According to Fan Club member Rhonda Labush, they organized the drive for the month of February.
“We advertised throughout our hockey clubs and our fans to help raise as much as we could,” said Labush.
Their collection included food, collars, bowls, blankets, towels, copy and colored paper, newspapers, cleaning supplies, toys and much more.
“We filled a truck and two full sized vehicles full of goodies. If I had to guess, I would say it was easily over $1,500 worth of needed items,” Labush said.
President/Executive Director at East Greenwich Animal Protection League, Tammy Gallo was surprised when Labush, John Dooley and Cat Butler walked in and kept unpacking more and more essential supplies.
“Everything is great, thank you so much. I can’t tell you how much we appreciate it,” Gallo said to the trio.
For the Fan Club, doing community fundraisers is nothing new.
“We just got done doing several drives. A food drive (which was donated to the RI Food Bank), a toy drive (for Hasbro Children’s Hospital) and our recent pet drive. This month we have silent auctions and donations for a past player who passed away from a brain bleed. All proceeds that we collect are being donated to the Colby Cave Memorial Fund,” Labush said.
