RIC softball rolls past Simmons

Freshman catcher Gabrielle Sweeney (Shirley, Mass.) smacked a three-run homer and sophomore pitcher Ashleigh von der Linden (Stratham, N.H.) earned the win as Rhode Island College completed a doubleheader sweep vs. Simmons in a 9-1 (five innings) win at Daly Field on Saturday afternoon.

 The Anchormen picked up where they left in game one and plated four runs in the top of the first. Sophomore left fielder Melanie Earley (Lumberton, N.J.) and classmate designated player Sydney Duclos (North Providence) knocked in runs with an RBI single and double, respectively, in the frame.

Sweeney smacked her first career homer with a three-run shot in the fourth.

Junior left fielder Sophia Crudale (Cranston) went 3-for-3 with two runs scored, a triple and an RBI, while von der Linden won her third game (3-1), allowing one run on three hits in four innings of work.

Fifth-year third baseman Victoria Young (Sterling, Conn.) went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and a double.

RIC outscored Simmons, 15-1, on the day.

Rhode Island College senior Abby Kidd (Granby, Conn.) was named the Little East Softball Pitcher of the Week for her performance in a 5-1 week for the Anchorwomen.

 Kidd appeared in five games, starting three of them. She was 3-0 with a 1.89 ERA and 23 strikeouts in 22.2 innings of work. Kidd fired a three-hit shutout and struck out eight as RIC blanked Simmons, 6-0, on March 15. Kidd came on in relief to earn the win, striking out five in 3.2 innings, as RIC bested Montclair State, 4-3 on March 12. She earned a win in relief, registering two strikeouts in 4.1 innings, as the Anchorwomen defeated Kean, 6-5, on March 10.

For the season, Kidd has appeared in seven games, starting four of them. She is 3-1 with a 2.87 ERA and 37 strikeouts in 31.2 innings of work.

Head Coach Lauren Hatfield’s team is 6-4 on the season.

Kelly wraps up career

Senior 197 lbs. Matthew Kelly (Katonah, N.Y.) went 1-2 to conclude his career at the 2025 NCAA Div. III Wrestling National Championship, hosted by Johnson and Wales at the Amica Mutual Pavilion on Friday.

Kelly opened action with a 4-0 setback vs. No. 6-seeded Joseph Patrella from Baldwin Wallace.

He then defeated VTSU Castleton’s Haven Tatarek, 4-2, in his next bout.

Kelly saw his run at the NCAA Championship end via a pin (4:25) to Wheaton’s (Ill.) Jackson Punzel.

Kelly was making his second career appearance at the national championships, having qualified at 184 lbs. during his sophomore season at New York University.

He earned All-Region honors for the third time in his career with a second place finish (197 lbs.) at the NCAA Div. III Northeast Region Championship on March 1-2.

Kelly finished the season with a 23-3 record to go along with 10 pins, five technical falls, 22 takedowns, four reversals and 25 near-falls.
