By RYAN D. MURRAY The Thunderbolts fell 33-28 to East Greenwich on Friday night during their Homecoming Game at Cranston Stadium.

The game may not have ended the way the 'Bolts wanted, but it was a thrilling affair, nonetheless.

"Definitely exciting," Cranston East head coach Isaiah McDaniel said. "You can't ask for a better high school football game than that; when they come down to the end and both teams give everything that they have and they play as hard as they can. You can't ask for a better game than that."

The Bolts had a chance to win the game when they had the ball at the East Greenwich 25 with 11.6 seconds left, but quarterback Da'Qwon Foster had his deep ball to Naz Milien intercepted by defensive back Matt Mckenzie.

It was a rough first game back for Foster, who had been out since Sept. 10. The junior was picked off four times, but McDaniel saw some good things from the signal caller.

"A bunch of positives," McDaniel said. "This was his first game since we played Coventry back in Week 1. He's been injured and he came back tonight and he ran the offense flawlessly. He led the team up and down the field. We moved the ball consistently tonight. I couldn't have asked for anything more from him."

East Greenwich quarterback Parke Hardesky threw four touchdown passes, three of which went to wide receiver Jack Farrelly.

The Bolts were headed by running back Laquinton Kelley, a senior, who scored two rushing touchdowns.

"He ran very hard," McDaniel said. "I'm proud of the way he has become a leader and works hard day in and day out. He was determined to do everything he could to help us win and he did that. We just came up a little short with too many penalties."

On the the first play of the game, Hardesky tossed a post to Farrelly for a 52-yard gain. Three plays later, Hardesky delivered a 17-yard touchdown pass to Jonah Hill and that gave the Avengers an early 6-0 lead. Next, kicker Joe Ruff added the extra point and upped the East Greenwich buffer to 7-0.

Early in the second quarter, Foster dumped off a pass to Carlos Cedeno, who took it 41 yards to the East Greenwich 11. Next, Kelley rushed left 11 yards and into pay dirt, and then Christian Mestre booted the extra point and evened the game at 7.

But with 8:15 remaining in the half, Foster connected on a swing pass to Romeo Cordero, who flew 45 yards down the sideline and into the end zone and that gave Cranston East a 14-7 lead.

"Romeo's a great athlete," McDaniel said. "He cares about what we do. I’m happy to have him out here. He gives 110 percent all of the time and those are the type of kids that you want out on your football team."

Cranston East committed a personal foul during the ensuing kickoff which resulted in a 15-yard penalty and gave the Avengers the ball at midfield.

And East Greenwich took advantage.

Senior running back Michael Balsamo capped the 50-yard drive with a 3-yard rushing touchdown and cut the East Greenwich deficit to 14-13. However, Ruff's extra point attempt was blocked by the Bolts defense.

Nevertheless, with just 10.1 seconds remaining in the half, Hardesky completed a 13-yard touchdown pass to Farrelly, who was in the left side of the end zone and that gave the Avengers 20-14 cushion as the teams headed in for a break.

Cranston East received the ball first to start the second half and on the second play of the drive, Foster threaded a needle through the middle to Naz Milien, who took it for a 66-yard gain to the East Greenwich 3. Next, Kelley rushed up the gut and in for the score and put Cranston East on top 21-20.

The Avengers drew a 27-21 lead midway through the third quarter when Hardesky connected on a 20-yard touchdown pass to Farrelly.

East Greenwich extended its buffer to 33-21 later in the frame when Hardesky delivered a 35-yard touchdown pass to a diving Farrelly in the end zone.

Cranston East pulled within 33-28 with 9:15 remaining in the contest when A'driahn Foreman rushed in for a touchdown from six yards out.

Cranston East falls to 0-5 with the defeat and plays at East Providence next on Saturday at 1:30 p.m.
