Officers Michael Nolan and Michael Schiappa were welcomed to the Cranston Police Department during a swearing-in ceremony held last week in City Hall’s Council Chambers. Both officers are joining Cranston Police after serving in other communities.
Nolan, a graduate of Coventry High School, earned a bachelor’s
degree in criminal justice from Nichols College in 2018. He graduated from the Rhode Island Municipal Police Academy in 2018 and joined the South Kingstown Police Department, where he served as a patrol officer for the past three years.
Nolan is a second-generation police officer. His father, Coventry Police Detective Sgt. Kevin Nolan, pinned his son’s badge at the ceremony.
Schiappa, a 2011 graduate of La Salle Academy in Providence, earned an associate degree in criminal justice from the Community College of Rhode Island in 2016. He graduated from the Rhode Island Municipal Police Academy in May of 2018 and served with the Johnston Police Department as a patrol officer for the past three years.
According to Chief of Police Col. Michael Winquist, Nolan and Schiappa were among 493 applicants in the department’s most recent hiring process.
“Their prior experience and training will significantly benefit the Cranston Police Department and the citizens they will serve. I wish them long, safe and enjoyable careers,” the chief said.
Mayor Ken Hopkins, who swore in the new officers, added: “Officers Nolan and Schiappa are quality appointments who have extensive experience in other law enforcement agencies and will serve Cranston citizens well. The Cranston Police Department continues to attract members throughout the state due to the respect they receive from the citizens they serve and the continued investment made to the department by our city.”
