Second annual Guns-n-Hoses charity hockey game

The Cranston Fire Department and Police Department will hold their second annual Guns & Hoses hockey game at 3 p.m. on April 30 at the Cranston Veterans Memorial Ice Arena.

Tickets are $10 per person at the door, online or through Facebook from Cranston Charity Hockey.

“It was basically started by a few of our guys and the fire guys,” said Detective Michael Caramante. “Last year they were trying to do something in honor of Matt Dennison who died in that car accident. They wanted to do a fundraiser for him and next thing we were putting the game together.”

Dennison, a hockey player from West Warwick High School, was one of two students in a car struck by a drunk driver on their way to watch a hockey game in West Warwick last February. As a way to honor his memory and raise funds for his family, the first annual hockey fundraiser was arranged and held.

“The game went pretty well last year,” Caramante said. “It was a pretty good success and was the first one. It was for a good cause that struck a lot of people’s hearts because it was so fresh. I think this time we’ll be doing a scholarship type of thing.”

The scholarship fund, which is now called the Cranston first responder scholarship, will benefit students of both high schools in the city, explained Firefighter Craig Massey. The plan is for the scholarship to go to just a few students at each school with it being awarded at each school’s respective awards nights.

In addition to money from ticket sales, there will be raffle for a variety of prizes donated from local businesses. Businesses can also donate $50 to the scholarship fund to have their logo and name placed into the event’s program.

“We had been trying to get the game off the ground for a few years now, but every year something would just come up and then COVID,” Massey said. “So, last year in mid January we finally got a core group of people together from the fire department and the police department. We started to plan the game, and at the point where we were set up to go we hadn’t chosen a charity yet. The accident had just happened and even though the kids weren’t from Cranston we have a saying in the Rhode Island hockey community that we take care of our own.”

Massey said that there was no question that it was a worthy cause and that in the end they had raised about $14,700.

“That went to the Matthew Dennison Foundation,” Massey said. “We were over the moon at the support out of the hockey community that came out to the event last year. We were just blown away, and we set a pretty high bar. This is more like our real year one as far as the fundraising goes. It’s still going well. We didn’t really expect to see the numbers we saw last year but we still feel we’re doing well.”
