OUR GREAT NATIONAL PARKS
* * * *

President Obama narrates this five-part, hour-long series about little-known national parks around the world, featuring some of the best nature photography you’ll ever see.

The former president makes a very credible narrator, having lived and/or visited most of the places. His soothing voice draws you into the stories, using short sentences and letting the photography tell the story.

The episodes don’t beat you over the head about climate change and saving the environment.

We meet the endangered species, some that have never been photographed up close, and learn interesting facts about them and how they interact with their surroundings. Only in the last minute do we get the strong, important message.

We begin with Hawaii, move on to Madagascar, Japan, Yellowstone, the Great Barrier Reef, Australia, Rwanda, Patagonia, Kenya, California and Indonesia.

Each episode offers interesting facts, beautiful photography and lots of action.

GREAT FREEDOM

(Prison Movie)

Germany’s paragraph 175 makes homosexuality a crime subject to prison terms of two years or more.

Many German soldiers were transferred from POW camps to prison where they were treated badly by the guards and fellow prisoners. They were identified by the number 175 tattooed on their arm.

Hans first meets Viktor, a macho prisoner who is in for murder. With Hans in and out of the decrepit prison, he developed an unusual bond with Viktor.

We watch Viktor’s revulsion slowly turn to affection, leading to an interesting ending.

While the film deals with homosexuality in prison, it does so discreetly -- digging into the relationships between the men and their attachment to the penal system.

Not pretty at times, the story deals openly with the subject.

Noisy Tale of Vengeance

Alexander Skarsgard is the muscular, vengeful, loud title character who spends his entire life tracking down his father’s killer.

His father happens to be a Viking king, and he is heir to the throne. The king’s brother, Aurvandil, kills him and takes his wife (Nicole Kidman) for his wife.

Amleth, the young son, escapes. Time passes. He is now a mean-spirited adult slave and makes his way to Iceland where the slaves are treated miserably by Aurvandil. Amleth gains his trust by winning a brutal game which resembles a field hockey game with big sticks and a hard ball aimed to kill the opponents.

There are many battles with opponents growling like bears and the mighty Amleth killing dozens of bad guys until the final battle when just about everybody dies.

This looks like a Shakespearean tragedy gone bad.

Is Amleth related to Hamlet?
