East, West baseball teams split series

The Cranston East and West baseball teams split their two games recently, as West rolled to a 11-5 win over East last week at home and the Bolts took a 6-4 decision on Monday at the stadium.

The two clubs were tied 3-3 in the bottom of the second inning of the first game, but the West bats would take off as the Falcons ran away with the win.

West would lead 5-3 after two innings and would score four runs in the third inning and two more in the fifth.

“It was huge. Our last three league losses, we had five hits combined. We had to put the ball into play and capitalize once we did. It was nice to hit the ball today so hopefully we can carry that,” said West coach Rob Malo.

Colby Kuzman went 2-for-4 with two RBI while Jacob Chin finished 3-for-4 with an RBI. Cole Carbone and Chris Piscione also knocked in runs for the Falcons.

Jake Snowling came on in relief and would earn the win.

“It felt good, the team really came together today and hit. We played good. I just had to focus and pound the zone. I learned to just work outside, pound the zone and throw offspeed,” said Snowling.

“He’s been great all year long. He’s that guy out of the bullpen that I cam confident in. He’s going to throw strikes. He may get hit, but it’s never too hard and never does too much damage, and then the defense does its thing behind him. He has confidence in throwing whatever he needs to throw,” said Malo of Snowling’s outing.

Carlos Morejo, Matthew Talabac and Kelvin Santos knocked in runs for East.

The Bolts struggled throughout the contest in the field and would commit six errors in the first two innings alone. Coach Gary Bucci was disappointed in his team’s showing in the field, which put the Bolts in a hole in the middle innings especially.

“It was one of the worst baseball games that I have been a part of. It was disgusting, it was embarrassing. I was just baffled, we had more errors than runs and hits combined. If you’re looking for a positive, (they continued to fight), but I am frustrated because these are talented kids. I don’t know what happened,” said Bucci.

Although the Falcons were excited to get the win, they are looking to improve and build some momentum. Although East was unable to close the gap, the Bolts did score a pair of runs in the sixth inning to keep West honest in the seventh.

“It gives us confidence but it shows us that we can’t back down,” Malo said. “They kept coming and kept getting hits. If you’re beating a team by five, six runs and are playing them the next game, they’re going to be hungry.”

The two teams were back at it on Monday at the Bolts got some revenge.

Kuzman’s bat stayed hot as he went 2-for-3 with an RBI while Anthony DeCotis knocked in another. Chin finished with three hits at the plate.
