Summer camp

The Parks and Recreation summer camp will run from July 5 to August 12 and registration goes live at 7 a.m. on April 25. A Google Forms link will be posted on that day and time. No payment is necessary at the time of registration. Parks and Recreation will invoice you, which will serve as your confirmation for your child’s attendance. Payment is due in full prior to the start of camp. Weekly and all summer rates. Four locations -- both age groups will be at all four locations. Age groups are 6-8 year olds and 9-12 year olds. Schedule will be posted prior to the start of camp.

 

Drop-in Activities

Join OneCranston Health Equity Zone from April 18 to April 22 for a week full of family-friendly drop-in activities and workshops at their new center at 70 Gansett Ave. The events are free and open to the public. Parents are required to stay on-site with children. Some events need pre-registration. For any questions contact Ivy at iswinski@comcap.org.

 

Cleanup at Doric Park

Councilwoman Aniece Germain will host a morning community cleanup from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on April 23 at Doric and Norman Olson Park.

 

Local Cleanup

The Edgewood Waterfront Preservation Association in conjunction with the Pawtuxet Village Association is sponsoring a cleanup of Stillhouse Cove and Pawtuxet Park on April 23 from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. RSVP required.

 

Cleanup at Meschanticut Lake

The public is invited to a cleanup at Meschanticut Lake on April 24 at 1 p.m., which will be led by Councilman Chris Paplauskas. This is a great community event for those needing service hours. Please bring gloves; trash bags will be provided. Everyone will meet in the Cranston West parking lot.

 

Annual May Breakfast and Raffle

 The Defenders of Animals will host a May breakfast and raffle for the public on May 1 at Governor Sprague Mansion (1351 Cranston St.). Tickets are $25 per person and can be purchased online at defendersofanimals.org. Seating is limited and 100 percent of proceeds go to the organization’s emergency care and spay/neuter fund.

 

Cigar Dinner for a Cure

 St. Mary’s Feast Society will host a cigar dinner for a cure on May 2 from 5:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. at 15 Phenix Ave., Cranston. Tickets are $100 per person and the menu includes penne calabrese, espresso rubbed sirloin roast, oven-roasted marble potatoes, vegetables and tiramisu and coffee. All proceeds will benefit the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. There will also be raffles, prizes, music and Kristoff and Alec Bradley cigars. Coffee with a Cop

 Cranston Police will host a coffee with a cop event at Café International on May 4 from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. The business is located at 675 Oaklawn Ave. There is no agenda – just a chance to ask questions, voice concerns and get to know the community’s officers.

 

 

Women and Infants Hospital 2022 Gala

 There will be a celebration of mother and earth on June 11 from 5:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the WaterFire Arts Center located at 475 Valley St., Providence. This event is important for raising critical funds for a new labor and delivery center at the hospital. Art Show for Animals

 Donate animal-themed art to the Community Art Show which will benefit the Defenders of Animals, Inc. The third annual art show will take place on May 14 from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the Governor Sprague Mansion at 1351 Cranston St. Defenders of Animals invites you to enjoy free food, wine, music, raffles and animal-themed art by local artists. 100 percent of proceeds go to Defenders of Animals. Almost May Gourmet Breakfast

 Woodridge Congregational UCC welcomes you to their 38th annual almost May gourmet breakfast on May 14. The event will be held at 546 Budlong Road and runs from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. Tickets for adults are $12 and tickets for children ages three to 10 are $6. The menu includes eggs, frittatas, Johnny cakes, waffles, ham, sausage, home fries, pastry, coffee, tea, juice and milk. Cranston Spring Festival

 Join Cranston Police for their Cranston spring festival on May 14 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 100 Sockanosset Cross Road (rear). There will be food trucks, vendors, exhibitors, K9 demonstrations, dance and karate demonstration and more. Cali the therapy dog will be present, and there will be a special performance by Gene Massa’s Bandemonium – All Star Jazz Band. Parks and Rec Summer Employment

 The Parks and Recreation Department is currently taking summer employment applications until May 27.  Applications are available online only through the Parks and Recreation website and Facebook page. Completed applications can be emailed to Recreation Program Coordinator Scott Sevegny at ssevegny@cranstonri.gov. Applicants can scan or take a photo of the application to be emailed.

Applicants must be Cranston residents and at least 16 years old by the time of employment.  Please note that by submitting an application, the applicant is not guaranteed a summer position with Parks and Recreation.  Open positions will be based on need and the number of returning employees from last year.

 

Featured Speaker

 Italian American Historical Society member Bernadette Conte will be the featured speaker at Santa Maria di Prata, Cranston, on May 15 in the event honoring our mothers. Her book, “Under the Pear Tree,” fulfills the commitment she made to her mother Caterina (Gaetanina) Cardi Capotosto, to write the family history.  This book is an account told by one Itrani family of the difficulties and struggles the Italian immigrant experienced at the turn of the 19th century in Knightsville, Cranston, Rhode Island. The event starts at 11 a.m.

 

Performance at Arctic Playhouse

 The Arctic Playhouse announces three weeks of performances of “The Hatmaker’s Wife.”  The show will run from April 21 to May 8.  Thursday, Friday and Saturday night performances are at 7:30 p.m., and Sunday matinees are at 2 p.m. More information is available on the theater website: www.thearcticplayhouse.com Tickets are available online or at the door ($18 online/$20 at door).

 

URI Music Department and Notable Works’ Spring 2022 Concert

 This event will take place in URI’s Recital Hall within the Fine Arts Center on May 15 at 3 p.m. and features the American Band, Directed by Brian Cardany. The American Band will be honored at this event by the RI Music Hall of Fame. The main focus of this event is to illustrate how Rhode Island is dealing with the climate crisis, highlighting revitalization efforts in our communities, as well as practicing current outreach strategies to connect to a wider and more diverse workforce, while broaching the question: “What can each of us do to work together to help build a more sustainable future?” This performance is free and open to the public; however, donations for Notable Works will be graciously accepted. Please join the Cranston Country Club for the Gregory Rubino Memorial Golf Tournament on June 25. CHSE Class of 2023 Yard Sale

The Cranston High School East class of 2023 will host a yard sale from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on April 30 outside Cranston East, 899 Park Ave. If you are interested in renting a table, please contact Ms. Bell at aabell@cpsed.net to sign up – it is $20 to rent a table space. Set up is from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. on April 30. Proceeds go toward helping the junior class raise money.

 

Comedy Course

 If you’ve ever thought of giving stand-up comedy a try, now’s your chance. This $200 Comedy Course kicks off on September 12 for six weeks in Warwick (except Columbus Day). The instructors are John Perrotta, Coleen Galvin Yaroshenko and Rockin’ Joe Hebert. At the end of the course, you’ll take the stage in our graduation show at Rhode Island’s newest comedy hot spot, the Comedy Park in Cranston. Hall of Fame Nominations Sought

 The Cranston Hall of Fame is looking for inductees for the class of 2022.  If you or someone you know is a worthy candidate, having graduated from one of Cranston high schools over 10 years ago, and have your mark professionally and in your community, send us your nomination.

Pre-K Lottery

 The RI State Pre-K lottery is now open. This lottery will run until July 6, and children who will be 4 before Sept. 1 may qualify. To apply, visit www3.ride.gov./PKL.

 

Pasta Dinner Benefit

 The St. Mary’s Feast Society will hold a special pasta and meatball dinner to benefit the family, created around MAE Organization For The Homeless’ signature meal, pasta and meat sauce. The event will be held from 6:30 to 10:30 p.m. on May 14. Tickets are $25 per person and a table of 10 is $200. Tickets are available at the Feast Society.

Bring your family for a hearty pasta dinner complete with garlic bread, salad and dessert! They will have Italian music, a photo booth and awesome raffles!

Calling all RI public high school juniors: The 2022 PrepareRI High school Internship Program is accepting applications to participate in on-site/in-person, paid summer experiential learning internships with local employers across the state.

Arts Scholarships for youth now open to register.

 Do you know a student aged 11 - 14 who loves to create and to perform? Encourage them to apply to our ARTS Scholarships 2022 program. Applications and guidelines are now available at www.ppacri.org/artsscholarships.

The ARTS Scholarships 2022 program, sponsored by the Textron Charitable Trust and the PPAC Annual Fund with support from WPRI 12 and Ocean State Charities Trust, offers young artists an opportunity to participate in local summer arts education program that will broaden their experience in their chosen area of study.

Qualified students must be aged 11 - 14 by June 1 of this year and reside in and attend school in Rhode Island.
