Nota-Masse honored as Superintendent of the Year

Representatives from the Rhode Island School Superintendents’ Association visited Monday’s Cranston School Committee meeting at Cranston High School West to recognize Superintendent Jeannine Nota-Masse for receiving the 2022 Rhode Island Superintendent of the Year Award.

Nota-Masse’s selection for the honor was announced in August. She has led Cranston Public Schools since 2015, having previously served as assistant superintendent. Her career has also included time as the district’s executive director of educational programs and services, principal of East Greenwich High School, assistant principal at Cranston High School East and as a Providence Public Schools teacher.

RISSA president Kathy Crowley – who resides in Cranston and serves as superintendent of East Providence’s public schools – said Cranston “has one of the highest concentrations of top-ranked public schools in the state of Rhode Island, and that is why we are here, to celebrate Jeannine as an outstanding educational leader.”

Crowley noted that Nota-Masse serves as RISSA’s secretary, and she spoke highly of the Cranston superintendent’s leadership and approach to the challenges educators face.

“I am very much familiar with Jeannine’s leadership capabilities,” she said, adding: “Jeannine has a sense of humor like no other … She makes us all laugh at times of stress.”

“We are very proud of you … We feel that you are a great superintendent, exemplary,” School Committee Chairman Dan Wall told Nota-Masse.

During brief remarks, the superintendent thanked the committee and the members of the district’s central administration.

“I would not be able to receive this award and do the work I do if it wasn’t for my family, who’s here tonight … but also my group of people that I work with everyday,” she said.

She added: “It’s been a stressful couple of years, but we do get through it with a lot of humor, a lot of collaboration … Thank you for all the work you do.”

According to RISSA, Nota-Masse will also be recognized during the American Association of School Administrators national conference scheduled for February in Nashville, Tennessee.
