To the Editor,
Thank you Samantha Grabelle for organizing the candlelight vigil last Thursday to express community solidarity against the recent “hate” flyers distributed in Oakland Beach.(Beacon 12/22/22)
I think that shrugging our shoulders and looking the other way just encourage hate to flourish. It invites complicity through silence as Martin Niemoller, a Lutheran minister in Nazi Germany, reminds us through his words:
“First they came for the Socialists
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Socialist
Then they came for the trade unionists
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a trade unionist
Then they came for the Jews
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Jew
Then they came for me
And there was no one left
To speak out for me”
