Don Torres caused quite a buzz around the J. Arthur Trudeau Memorial Center in Warwick and beyond when he released his debut album “The Man, The Myth, The Legend” in 2023. He did this under the hip hop moniker MC DT while fueling his creative passion for music into a tangible array of tunes.
Since that time, he’s been working on a follow-up, and it’s set to come out in a matter of days. It’s simply titled “Pop”, and it’ll be officially unveiled via a dance party that’s happening at the Trudeau Center on August 15 from 6-8pm. It’s free for anyone to attend, and it’s one of the many examples of the organization bringing together the local music scene with the services they provide for people with disabilities.
Torres again worked with Ian Campopiano from the Providence experimental rock act Ontologics. Campopiano has been a direct support professional at the Trudeau Center for the past 20 years, and he crafted the beats and arrangements for the songs within the upcoming full-length while Torres contributed the rhymes and lyrics.
“Don and I were really excited and thankful for the support he received from the first album,” said Campopiano. “After his first album, we created his YouTube channel, and it has garnered over 5,000 views. We’ve explored his creativity with different videos, visual themes and remixes over the past year or so in addition to recording the second album. I’ve watched his musical ability grow, such as recalling and memorizing lyrics along with the timing of phrases during rehearsing and recording sessions.”
This year, Campopiano was selected for an award from the Community Provider Network of Rhode Island. The organization visited the studio to shoot a video of them working on a song.
“We showed how he crafts his lyrical ideas and then the process of recording, editing, and the final composition,” he adds.
Along with collaborating with Campopiano, another similar trait “Pop” has that’s similar to his first album is the overall sound and sonic quality.
As MC DT, Torres exhibits an abstract delivery while the structures of songs like “CEO”, “Dance Party” and “Monday Nite Raw” are rapid with the beats sort of acting like the bumpers in a pinball machine. It’s something different, and it’s also really cool to hear Torres both expanding and fine tuning his artistic talents.
As of press time, it’s unknown where and when the upcoming album will be available on streaming services. It has been confirmed that Torres plans on giving away physical copies of “Pop” at the Trudeau Center on August 15.
Make sure to stop by on that date at 6 p.m. to grab a copy of the album and have a fun time. For more information about Torres’ music as MC DT, find his YouTube channel at youtube.com/@mcdtthemanthemyththelegend. To know more about the J. Arthur Trudeau Memorial Center, log onto trudeaucenter.org.
