District Champs: WCA takes home two titles

By ALEX SPONSELLER The Warwick Continental American 11 and 12-year-old All-Star teams continued to impress this summer as each wrapped up District III titles last week.

The 12’s wrapped up an undefeated district tournament and would top South Kingstown 7-4 in the final after beating them 1-0 in the previous game.

“Going into the game, we knew they would be a challenge. We played South Kingstown before and it was a 1-0 game. We knew it was going to be a dog fight from the get-go,” said 12’s coach Dave Geer.

WCA’s bats would take off down the stretch to outshine SK’s offense which took an early lead. The 12’s will now get ready for the opening round of this week’s state tournament. Geer feels that the tough road to the district title will serve the 12’s well, as they had two one-run victories as well as the come from behind win in the final.

“Our players have been together for a few years now and it was a hard-fought game. It was actually a good thing that they had to face some adversity and come from behind, that will help us moving forward as a team,” said Geer. “They are very mature, they still act like kids which is fun and what is the beauty of the game. They can have fun and enjoy baseball, it’s fun to be a part of.”

Geer hopes to see the club continue to play with confidence moving forward.

“They need to believe in each other, it’s a simple as that. They just need to believe in each other and be confident when their numbers are called. If they stick to the game plan they’ll be fine,” Geer said.

The 11’s rolled to a 13-3 win over Chariho last Wednesday to take home the title

Logan Fernandes and Collin Freitas each had two hits and three RBI while Mario Cerullo added two hits and two RBI. Jackson Field and Brayden Randall each scored two runs while Kenny George added another.

Ryan Ingerson took the mound and finished with four strikeouts for WCA.

“Pitching was key, we minimized the errors, we hit, it was as complete of a game as you could get at that age,” said 11’s coach Mario Cerullo.

Cerullo added: “Everyone did the job that they were asked to do. Guys like Jonathan Langlais for example, we asked him to switch positions and play right field for us and he did a great job. Their aggressiveness at the plate, they were aggressive and that’s all you can really ask for from 11-year-old kids. If you step up to the plate and are aggressive then good things will happen. I was proud of them.”

The WCA 12’s included: Braeden Geer, Braiden Sawyer, Timothy Blackwood, Charlie Brown, Ryan Santo, Nick Andruchow, Manny Loud, James Boughman, Jack Proulx, Drew McCaffrey, Spencer Knutton, Brady Slinn and Chase Prata.

The WCA 11’s included: Brayden Randall, Jackson Field, Kenny George, Collin Freitas, Mario Cerullo, Logan Fernandes, Jason Vieira, Ryan Gee, Brayden Irick, Brody Lomas, Jonathan Langlais, Paxton McGuinness and Ryan Ingerson.
