Falcons fall to EG, drop to 0-2

By ALEX SPONSELLER The Cranston West football team’s slow start to the season continued as it fell to East Greenwich 42-6 in its first game at West since its newly-renovated complex opened.

The Avengers jumped out to an early lead and never slowed down, controlling from start to finish with a high-flying offense and tough defense.

“They’ve got some big-time receivers, their quarterback puts it in the right spot, they’ve got some players over there and they made more plays than we did tonight. We’ve got to get back to the drawing board and find some answers to a few things right now,” said West head coach Tom Milewski after the loss.

EG quarterback Parke Hardesky threw for four touchdown passes in the win, including a pair to Jack McMullen. The Falcons got on the board late in the second quarter when Matt DeFusco connected with Kris Degaitas for a 33-yard score. Degaitas also hauled in an interception on defense.

“We had some penalties that killed us, coaching-wise we allowed 12 men on the field which can’t happen, we had some turnovers which can’t happen, we’ve got to find an identity,” said Milewski, who was proud of Degaitas’ performance and hopes it will continue to fuel the West offense.

“We’ve got some injuries, some bumps and bruises, once we get some of these guys back that should help us gel as well. Kris brings a spark to us as a captain. Offensively he brings a spark, guys seem to rally around him so it was good to get him back out there tonight. I’m happy for him, I’m happy that he was able to help us rally a bit. More guys have to step up, though, it can’t just be a one-man show,” said Milewski.

The Falcons fell to 0-2 with the loss and will next face South Kingstown on the road this weekend. With only three games remaining in the regular season, the Falcons are going to look to make a quick turnaround to make a postseason run.

“We’ll get there, but it’s going to take another week to get there. The schedule is the schedule, we’ve got to get back to the basics and do some things well, clean up a few things,” Milewski said. “East Greenwich is a solid team that made more plays than us. We’ve got good players, but we have some inexperience out there. We’re taking our lumps right now which will hopefully help us in the future.”
