Falcons hold off Wizards to get back on track

By ALEX SPONSELLER The Cranston West football team bounced back from a tough Injury Fund loss to beat visiting West Warwick 20-7 last Friday night.

The Falcons would take a 13-0 lead over the Wizards into halftime thanks to a five-yard rushing score from Teddy Shackelford and a 48-yard touchdown reception from Marcus Chung off of a pass from quarterback Matt DeFusco.

The clubs played a scoreless third quarter, and West Warwick would get within striking distance when quarterback Brady Miale connected with Richard Medeiros on a touchdown to make the score 13-7 midway through the fourth quarter.

The Falcons would respond less than two minutes later when Dimitri Leblanc broke off a 33-yard rushing touchdown on the ensuring drive which would be enough to wrap up the victory.

“I was very happy. We just wanted to close out the game, that was something that we talked about all week. Closing things out and finishing. West Warwick is a very physical team, they came at us and we went back at them. It was a throwback football game. Two tough teams going at it. It was nice coming back after a tough loss to Coventry last week, it was nice to see them fight through some adversity. It will be good to build some momentum moving forward,” said West head coach Tom Milewski after the win.

The West offensive line was dominant throughout the game and allowed multiple Falcon running backs to be productive.

“The offensive line did a nice job of opening holes up front. (Running back) Noah Ciceron did a good job of stepping up in the inside run game. Marcus had some nice runs for us. We really got a good push up front. The offensive line doesn’t always get the glory, but they did a nice job of coming together tonight,” said Milewski.

The West defense was largely stout in the contest. Outside of the long touchdown reception, one of West Warwick’s few big plays was when Miale connected on another long pass in the third quarter which drove it deep into West territory. The West defense responded, getting an interception from Hudson Carvalho to end the threat.

“We had a couple of breakdowns defensively, but I was happy with the way our defense performed. (West Warwick’s Jonathan Griffin) is a tough runner. The kids did a good job of gang tackling and coming downhill hard on defense,” Milewski said.

The Falcons improved to 1-0 in the regular season and will next head to Pawtucket to face Shea this week. Milewski and his staff are expecting a quick turnaround in preparation.

“The kids should enjoy it and be happy with it. The coaches though, I’m not sure if you can ever really relax because we will start talking about Shea (on Saturday),” said Milewski. “We’re going to put this game behind us, talk about the things we need to fix. I’m happy for the seniors, happy for the crowd, but now we are going on the road.”
