West keeping pace in DII playoff hunt

The Cranston West boys soccer team is off to a strong start as it looks to return to the Division II playoffs this fall. West started with a 4-2 league record an 6-4 overall record.

Kyle Fay has led the Falcons with six goals while Luke Reiner has added five. Chris Melise and Sam Naiefeh have also scored three goals. Fay leads the team in points with 14 while Reiner has 10.

New West coach Yair Correa has been pleased with his team’s start this fall and feels that its depth and versatility have been key in attacking opposing clubs.

“I’m extremely happy and I feel very blessed to say that we have 10-plus kids in the stat sheet each night. When any team is that versatile on the scoresheet, it’s nearly impossible to stop. We’re doing a lot of things in a positive manner. We’re trying to succeed with as many weapons as possible. The more weapons we have, the more unstoppable we’re going to be,” said Correa.

The team also boasts a large junior varsity team. The two clubs practice together every day which has also helped boost the competition, even on off days, according to Correa.

“We have some great coaches on staff and we have a lot of depth. What separates us from a lot of other teams in the state of Rhode Island is that we have a really deep roster, we have a large JV team as well. They all have very specific roles every second they’re out there, the goal for these kids is to start obviously, but a lot of the times it is the bench players that give us the spark. They really create that intensity,” said Correa.

The Falcons were slow out the gate and lost three of their first four matches. West would rebound, though, and rattle off four straight wins by a combined score of 20-5 before falling to Chariho on Monday.

West faced Tiverton on Wednesday, but the results were not available at press time. West will next be taking on rival Cranston East for a City Cup showdown on Saturday.

Correa hopes to see his team carry its momentum into the back half of its schedule and to continue to work together as a unit.

“That’s been one of the challenges, getting them to understand that this is not an individual sport. It’s about 24 guys. The more versatile you are as a unit, that’s how you become unstoppable,” said Correa.
