By ALEX SPONSELLER The Cranston West girls tennis team fell to visiting Moses Brown 6-1 last week.
West’s third doubles pairing of Estina Dyer and Liz Morales picked up the team’s lone win by a 6-0, 6-1 decision.
Despite the loss, the Falcons played hard against Moses Brown – one of the state’s top teams – and saw girls like Mia Buco battle hard. Buco fell 5-7, 4-6 at second doubles in a match that lasted nearly two hours.
“We’ve been very happy. Playing in Division I, everyone that you play is very good, so for us to have a few wins this year is good considering the competition. I’m very thrilled with the team, they work very, very hard and the captains have been fantastic,” said West coach Jim Lucas.
Lucas has been thrilled with his seniors who have taken the reins as leaders this fall.
“It’s an experienced group and they’ve come together very well. We’ve gotten some great leadership from our five senior captains and win or lose, they try really hard. The morale of the team is fantastic, it always is. I have no complaints,” said Lucas.
Lucas was also happy to see his team give Moses Brown a tough go regardless of what the scoreboard indicated.
“I told them that the fact that they were out there that long shows us something, it shows that we are competitive. You can see that it is 6-1, 6-0, but if you’re out there for two hours you know that it was a good game,” said Lucas.
West fell to 3-8 on the season and faced Smithfield on Senior Night on Wednesday. The results were not available at press time.
With just a few matches remaining on the schedule, Lucas hopes to see the club finish strong down the stretch.
“Our goal is to play our best, there are a few winnable matches left … there’s potential to win a few more matches so that is what we will look to do,” said Lucas.
