YAS—best chicken sandwich in R.I.

YAS Chicken has taken Rhode Island by storm!

Especially the Brown students that have been flocking to 272 Thayer St. for the tastiest, freshest chicken sandwich I’ve ever eaten.

The new restaurant is not handicapped accessible, and the stairs are steep, but there were plenty of gallant students, male and female, who will hold the door open for you and offer assistance.

The place is bright and cheery, with long tables where people eat cafeteria style. The take-out business seems to be doing very well, also.

Customers choose from the dozen or so menu items, giving their name, and waiting patiently while their chicken is made to order for them.

We both chose the YAS Supreme, a humongous piece of chicken with a crispy, crunchy crust on a fresh soft roll, smothered in a spicy garlic glaze and topped with coleslaw and pickles.

Pick up a bunch of napkins and a fork to retrieve the items that fall out as you try to get your mouth around the sandwich.

I can without question say that it is the best chicken sandwich I have ever eaten.

Never again will I settle for a fast-food chicken sandwich.

The eclectic Asian fusion menu also features Fried Gyoza (Pork Dumplings) at six for $5.99; Seafood Ragoon at four for $6.99; plus corn dogs, French fries and tater tots.

For those with a big appetite, there is the Chicken Waffle-chicken on a Belgian waffle ($12.49).

The Yankee Doodle is a chicken sandwich with mac and cheese ($9.99).

The Zhang family started the growing chain in Massachusetts and moved to the East Side of Providence recently. I can picture more openings in Rhode Island near college campuses.

The only challenge is the parking on Thayer St., but a trip around the block will usually find someone pulling out with a big bag of take-out.

Call 254-9359 for take-out.
