It sounds abstract but a fundamental idea of Karl Marx was that " social being determines social consciousness ". You simply cannot explain all the social upheavals of the last 100 years by the passivity and submission of the masses to the rich and powerful. Working class people know instinctively that the boss is not their friend, that city , state , and the federal government are far more responsive to the wealthy class than to the common people.Even Roosevelt's New Deal was motivated by a real fear of violent revolution during the Great Depression.To be sure , the mere illusion of democracy is a threat to the privileged class.. Once I heard a familiar voice on WPRO talk radio urge people who were not right wing NOT TO VOTE ..And all night long Red Eye Hate Radio rants about creeping socialism. Imagine these dreary conservatives thinking that President Obama is some kind of Marxist , that so is Hillary Clinton. I don't think they are very confident in the security of their rotten capitalist system.They are intellectually and morally bankrupt. They have one profound thought : the world in which THEY are on top is the best of all possible worlds.
