After experiencing overwhelming success over the past two years, the 3rd Annual Brian Moretti Hockey Classic will take place on Sunday, May 22, at 4 p.m. at the Cranston Veterans Memorial Ice Rink.
Moretti, who grew up playing hockey in Cranston and played high school hockey at Cranston West, passed away suddenly in March 2014 at the age of 26.
Due to Moretti’s love of hockey, his good friend, Matt Brannon, had the idea to have an annual hockey game in Moretti’s memory back in 2014, and the event has been a Cranston community staple ever since.
The cost of admission will be $5, and merchandise such as sweatshirts and t-shirts will be sold at the rink, as well. Additionally, a silent auction will be held for anyone who wishes to partake.
The rosters for the annual game will be made up of Cranston West hockey alumni, friends Moretti grew up playing with and a few of his teammates from Johnson and Wales.
“The last two years have been an overwhelming success,” Brannon said. “It just goes to show what type of person and how much respect Brian had throughout our city. Speaking on behalf of the players, each guy is honored to take the ice in his memory. We play for Brian because Brian would play for us.”
All proceeds from the game will go towards the Brian Moretti Scholarship Fund, which awarded its first scholarship last year.
Over its first two years, the classic has raised close to $20,000.
