Cranston native returns home for fall cleanup event

Posted

Luca Rebussini, a sophomore at the University of Rhode Island, recently organized a fall cleanup event to take place in the historic Oaklawn Village area of Cranston.

As a part of his obligations as a pledge to the Sigma Chi fraternity, Rebussini decided to organize a service project that would benefit his hometown. Rebussini is no stranger to service, having done a similar project for Boy Scouts in the past.

“I used to hang out here and play here with friends, so I figured it would be nice to do a cleanup here. Lots of people use this trail,” Rebussini said. “I contacted the city and spoke to Tony Liberatore from Parks and Recreation. He was thrilled to be getting the cleanup help because the city is so short-handed. They donated the bags for us.”

Rebussini even contacted other local organizations to help out any way they could with the event.

“Ronzio’s and Domino’s both donated pizza for our lunch,” he said.

As the philanthropy chairperson for his pledge class, a great deal of Rebussini’s time is spent designing, organizing and leading various charitable events, such as the recent fall cleanup.

Pledge class president Mike Graikoski was pleased with the turnout that drizzly day.

“Everyone really stepped up,” Graikoski said.

Sigma Chi brother Anthony Cammarano, a sophomore, agreed.

“It’s not easy getting college students up and out this early on a Sunday morning,” he said.

Rebussini was most pleased with the group effort that took place to make the event a success.

“Everyone really helped out,” he said. “My parents were supportive and extremely helpful borrowing rakes from neighbors and getting them here. The local places and the city helped out. It really all came together. And the best part is, ‘I’m able to give back to my hometown.’”
