Former Cranston West three-time state champion Leigh Petranoff made a big splash on the national stage last week, placing third in the women’s javelin at the USA Track and Field National Championships in Sacramento, Calif.
Petranoff threw the javelin 189-feet, seven-inches (57.78 meters). The winning throw was 204-10 by American record holder Kara Patterson. Petranoff still holds the Rhode Island high school record with a throw of 145-feet, one-inch.
The 2014 USATF Outdoor Championships brought the nation’s best athletes to Northern California while also serving as the final stop on of the 2014 Outdoor USATF Championship Series, including stops at the Penn Relays and Drake Relays in April, the Prefontaine Classic in May, and the Adidas Grand Prix in June.
