The Cranston Police Department on Friday welcomed three new officers to its ranks, while a pair of veterans were promoted.

Officers Ryan Viens, Brian Corvese and Stephen O’Leary were all sworn in during a ceremony in City Hall’s Council Chambers, with a capacity crowd of family members, friends and fellow police personnel looking on. The three new officers graduated from the 124th class of the Rhode Island Municipal Police Training Academy earlier in the day.

Additionally, Michael Pezzullo was promoted to lieutenant, while Justin Rutkiewicz was promoted to the rank of sergeant.

“It’s a proud day for the newly promoted officers, but also for the Cranston Police Department,” Chief of Police Col. Michael Winquist said.

Corvese graduated from Cranston High School East in 2010, and earned an associate degree in criminal justice from Rhode Island College. He previously worked as a correctional officer with the Essex County Sheriff’s Department in Massachusetts.

O’Leary graduated from St. Mary’s High School in Worcester, Mass., in 2004, and earned a bachelor’s degree in business from Worcester State University. He is a sergeant in Air National Guard Reserve Unit A67, and has twice been deployed to Afghanistan. He previously worked in loss prevention department for Cumberland Farms.

Viens – whose father, Phil Viens, is retired from the Johnston Police Department – graduated from Smithfield High School in 2008 and is currently studying criminal justice at the Community College of Rhode Island. He previously worked as a manager at Scituate Beverage and as a laborer for Master Building Technologies in Providence.

Winquist – who was joined by Mayor Allan Fung, Maj. Todd Patalano and Maj. Robert Quirk – advised the new officers that “your integrity and honesty should always guide you as a moral compass.” He also urged them to pursue their respective goals.

“The possibilities are endless, and the future is in your hands,” he said.

Fung called the day a “joyous occasion,” and said the new members of the department join a “long legacy of officers … who have served, and served with distinction.”
